Just picked this up today in a lot. I think this says year 5 10 2 Meiji? How do I get a Gregorian date from this? I found some charts, but I'm not sure how to interpret the number itself. Thanks
I use this site for dating Japanese coins. http://worldcoingallery.com/countries/Japanese.htm It should be Meiji year 25. I usually can find that in Krause to get the Western date. 1892 I think?
Japanese coins are dated by the nengo (reign period). Meiji began in 1867, so add the reignal years to the start of the reign and you have the date. Same for Chinese and other eastern coins.
