I just picked up this Seated Liberty Quarter for my 7070 album. I put the grade at about F12. Anyone agree or disagree with that? I always look for value, but it's getting harder to find decent coins below the CoinWorld book value for the grade. I paid the VG8 price for this one. I have tried to keep the value of the coins in my 7070 album close to $25.00, but as I get closer to finishing it I realize that to get the quality of coins I want in the album I'm going to have to go to $50-$100. Either that or I'll settle for some coins in AG3. That means it's going to take quite a bit longer for me to acquire the remaining 16 coins I need. Such is the life of a collector...
I'd say it's right on the cusp between VG and Fine. Personally, I'd call it VG10 to be conservative, since there is some slight weakness to LIBERTY on the shield, but on the other hand, it's close enough that many folks would call it F12, and I wouldn't really quibble with that. It's a decent circulated coin, and a fun 7070 addition. A $25.00 ceiling leaves a lot of holes empty in the 7070 set! $50-100 might get you there, though even then those Seated dollars are gonna be tough. Regardless of the grade and budget limits, it's a fun set. I did it with G-F coins the first time around, and I swear I had more fun with that first low-grade set than I did later with VF-MS coins.
PS- just checked my "on the fly" grading impression against the PCGS/Photograde standards. If you scroll back to the left on that page, you can compare the lower grades. It's a tough call between VG10 and F12 on yours, but judging from the amount of detail on the eagle's feathers, I reckon this one does make F12. At VG8 money, it's a solid buy.
The images are too dark and small to yield a reasonably accurate grade. Next time use a non-reflective black or dark gray background. And of course get a larger image of the coin.
I would grade this coin as a solid F12. The nice, original toning gives it good eye appeal. The off-center strike is "off" enough that I would add an additional premium ($20 to the value). Nice example.
Now that I look at the pic I realize the image is too dark to really see the LIBERTY on the shield. The L is worn but the rest is pretty sharp. I guess I still need to work on my photography skills.
I see that now. When I posted I actually thought I had a couple of decent shots, but now I realize you can't really see the detail in those images. I'll have to work on that. Thanks.
The images are kinda dark but I was able to see enough from them last night when I was at work on a full sized monitor. While I've seen better pics, I've also seem much worse.
It’s hard to tell from the pics but I’d say VG10. A little too much wear on the shield to warrant a Fine. But it’s definitely better than an 8 so I would say you did well.
