Hello, just found a 2012 shield penny, weighs 2.5 g. And looks like a 1943 steel penny only it's not steel because it doesn't stick to my magnet. What happened to it? No pic, but you'll have to trust me it looks like a steel penny. I'll send pic when I can it's quite an ordeal as I'm used to sending pics via my phone.
There are science experiments to change the coppers color, or to plate it. Also many third party companies that plate coins and resell them. without pictures, we assume it's plated. Which is considered damage. Don't ask me if you should keep it. I hoard all my change even though I don't really search it at all.
Either plated, or it has had the copper plating removed, or the least likely possibility it was struck on a non plated planchet.
I was wondering if it was the non plated planchet scenario, that would be interesting at least. Oh well, thanks.
