Usually I post only on the Ancients forum but I decided to ask a question here. I am looking to buy a US bond or US treasury security from the US Civil War era. The market is awash with Confederate material and I need no more of that, but finding a similar one from the US Union side is my present goal. I attended the Philly show last week and saw a number of them on display but could find none for sale. Does anyone know where such an object might be purchased or who might have one for sale? The usual on line dealers in currency apparently do not list any. Thanks.

Have you contacted Executive Currency or Denleys of Boston? If not you might want to and let them know what you are interested in. Possibly send them a want list. They usually have connections to those that have this type of specialized material and may be able to acquire it for you. Perhaps @SteveInTampa may have some suggestions for you.

Stacks Bowers just sold some in their auction of the Herzog Collection at ANA.

I suspect by now you are aware of how rare and expensive Civil War-era U.S. Treasury bonds really are. The bonds themselves regularly sell for five and often six figures. Many do not exist at all outside of museum collections. Even interest coupons from some of these bonds can go for $100 apiece. But they are undeniably beautiful works of the engravers art. If you'd like to take a look at some unissued samples, the Library of Congress site has a digitized copy of the American Bond Detector online.

Thanks for that bit of information. I still hope to be able to acquire one for my own collection.

Thanks, again, for the encouragement. By the way someone is selling on line (for several months now)what it is purported to be a post Civil War US Treasury specimen example of one of these bonds for banks to be able to detect forgeries and counterfeits. I may have to go with something like this.

That sounds exactly like a page from the Bond Detector. Check it against that link I posted earlier. These are easy to identify as they have triangular pieces blocking out certain design elements. This would be the most cost-effective way to obtain a bond sample and they were printed by the BEP from the same engraved plates.

I'd hold out for what I really want.

Well, that is quite a site. I wonder if the person selling his is actually downloading and printing these copies from this bond detector.

Yes, be sure they are not modern reproductions before you buy anything.
