Tried vCoins, but can't find any. eBay is also difficult to search, but so far no luck. Anyone know of dealers who might have some low-priced coins from this region and timer period? Before 1730?
Don't know for sure but that might not be so easy to do. Before 1798 there were about 75 different entities minting coins in Switzerland, all with different denominations and different values. What that translates into is that with such a small country, and so many different entities minting coins - nobody ever minted a whole lot of them because they were all primarily for local use. And that usually means that not a whole lot of them still exist. Which means they may not be so inexpensive, nor easy to find. Now I could be wrong on this but just for giggles I did a quick, very quick, Google search and no coins from prior to 1730 popped up. I'm sure there's some out there, somewhere, but finding them and the cost - that is the question. If I were you I think I'd contact a dealer or two on VCoins that sells the more modern Swiss coins and ask them. They should be able to give you basic info.
MA-coins. I think the site is something like a European vcoins. Never bought anything but various dealer stock has popped up when I've tried to ID medieval European minors and German states in the past
MA Coins certainly. I would also suggest you look at the website of Sincona, the leading Swiss auction house. They regularly auction a wide variety of older Swiss coins, including some that are not so expensive.
Yes- they also have an auction site as well. Have ordered from a few of their shops- very good service. To get more accurate search results, use German spellings in their search box.
Thanks. I did a quick search and could not find the auction site. Can you give me the URL? Edit: Nevermind. I see the link right on the main website. https://www.muenzauktion.info/?lang=en Thanks for the endorsement and the language tip, too.
I don't know where to buy them - seems hard to find. I did stumble across this ref. site you may find interesting: BERN BILLON AND SILVER COINAGE 1700-1800 Change the number in the URL (bern2.html; bern3.html; &ct.) to have a look around
By the way, @ma-shops is an active member here. So if you have any questions regarding the site ... Christian
For high quality early Swiss coinage, best way.... Go to sixbid and look at esp. the Swiss based auctions like Hess/ Sincona/ Nimismatic Ars Classica/ Maison Palambo. However other firms like Kunker/ Rauch/ Elsens/ have Swiss material. Heritage/ Stacks also have Swiss material. I recently got this one from Spink Auction. AV Dukat 1653 Basel FDC (weak centers due to bad dies)
try my best "Active" as often as possible... @chrisild I am not sure, but sure I asked before - will you be on the WMF 2019 in Berlin?
Usually I go there every year, yep. Problem next year is that I also need/want to go to the US, pretty much at the same time. Will see what I can do. Christian
MA-Shops will be definitely there in 2019, if you r not traveling during that time we will see each other there
I've dealt with a few of the dealers at MA-Shops and have been very pleased with them. Most if not all use PayPal. One even refunded some money to me because of over payment. How honest is that? The dealers have a wide variety of coins and the prices are reasonable. Be mindful of the minimum order and shipping charges. Best wishes.
