Front says Carolus III DG with a coat of arms and a crown above it with a R on the leftside and a II on the right side of the coat of arms.

Back says Hispaniaram Rex 1710 with a Crown at the top and under neath crown has Carolus Spelt each letter on top of another and III below it.

Also there is a Hole that goes all the way threw this coin the hole is Under the Carolus Spelt together going threw the other side of coin under the Coat of Arms.

It appears similar to a Spanish silver 2 reales coin. The reign of Carlos III, though, was 1759-88. Phillip V ruled 1700-46. The hole lowers the value of the piece by at least 50-90%.

It seems alot of these coins have holes in them, Could they have been made with the holes?

No, these were drilled by people usually intending to run a necklace through it. Most government issued coins with intentional holes occurred only in the 20th century (except for Chinese and Japanese cash coins). Those holes would be in the exact center and are about 3 millimeters wide or more.

Hmmmm - this coin presents an intersting idea. There is no doubt that the reverse of the coin bears the crowned shiled of Castile & Leon. And the obverse bears the design of a 2 reale of Carlos II used in 1682. Only this coin has Carlos III as the monarch. Now then the interesting part.

In 1701 the Spanish War of Succession began, it lasted until 1713 ( 1715 by some accounts ). The primary opponents during this war were Philip V and Carlos III who was at the time the Arch Duke of Austria. As expected this war went back and forth with both sides winning at various times. But in 1705 Carlos III was indeed recognized and declared to be King Of Spain by his faction. Of course at the same time Philip V was still recognized as the legitimate King by his faction and most of the other monarchies of Europe.

So - it does make me wonder one of two things. Either this coin is genuine and was struck by Carlos during this time that he was the supposed King of Spain or it is an elaborate counterfeit. Personally I have never heard of either as existing. But it does present an interesting possibility. I could easily see where the coin could be genuine as the striking of such coinage would be expected as it would go far towards establishing the legitmacy of Carlos' claim to the throne during the war. And if it is indeed genuine it would truly be something to hold onto - holed or not ! Regardless it definitely deserves further & serious rersearch.

So LordNos - if I were you I would put that coin safely away and do my best to contact some of the leading experts for Spanish coinage.

No mint mark but maybe thats because its 1710? and they didnbt do mint marks then? Not sure.

If anyone has ever seen this coin please give details and if on a website and such.... Would be good to find out what the coins worth and how many were made? If anyone has any websites that I can find info about this and such It would be apreciated also.

    LordNos -

It is extemely unlikely you will ever find that coin on web site. I was utterly amazed to see it here. I collect these types of coins, have for many years, and I've never heard or read of one before. And none of the books on the subject that I have even mention them.

Your best bet would be to contact someone like Dan Sedwick in Winter Park, Fla. - Frank F. Gilboy in Isla de la Palma, Spain or his son Dr. Christopher Gilboy in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada.

These are some of the world's leading experts on these coins and I seriously doubt that anyone but them would be able to help you.
