We have had many coins here from Amisos, Pontos, including the large and wonderful Headless Medusa type. There have been other posts featuring the Medusa head on aegis and even the wolf headdress. The Baltimore show provided me a type that undercuts them all. We all know that many Greek bronzes are a bit ordinary but here we have the Amisos entry in small (AE 13), bloodless but useful for small purchases. I do not recall seeing these posted here before but perhaps I have forgotten it. The obverse is Artemis right. The reverse is a tripod-lebes or round bottomed bowl or cauldron supported by a tripod. This type is generally dated to 125-100 BC and is needed by those intent on a set of the types from Amisos. I thought this little coin was cute so it came home with me. Feel free to show your other types from Amisos but we have a current thread on the Headless Medusa so I hope someone has some of the other types from this prolific mint city.
Hmm, I don't think I have that one. There are several Amisos bronzes I'd still like to have. Meanwhile, here are some coins from Amisos which don't feature decapitation. Both are very common, especially the second coin.
Nice coin, that type is still on my wish list. My coins: A wonderful specimen of the Amisos pegasus coin. Amisos bronze coin 80-70 B.C. Obverse: Head of Perseus right, wearing Phrygian helmet. Reverse: AMIΣOY, Pegasus grazing or drinking left, monograms below and left. Then I also got this type. Amisos bronze coin 120 B.C. - 63 B.C. Obverse: Helmeted head of Ares right. Reverse: AMI-ΣOY across fields, sword in sheath, star in crescent at upper left, IB at upper right, ΡΠMK monogram at lower left, no monogram at lower right.
I really like that coin, Doug. Recently, I came across one with some corrosion issues, but I liked the style (and it was cheap). Anyway, I am not sure it is the same as yours? It is a bit bigger - AE 18 - I am kind of new to this kind of material, but here it is, with my effort at attribution: Pontos, Amisos Æ 18 Struck under Mithradates VI (c. 125-100 B.C.)
