Any contact mark from another coin is considered Post Minting Damage. Especially when it's incused into the field or raised metal damage.
I was wondering what that was called. What i dont understand is that the image that looks 3ish is raised, not sunk in.
A contact mark could be incused and if hit in a strange angle also look raised. But it's definitely not a 3.. Think of this.. If it were a 3 what other numeral or letter thats part of the original image would it relate too? It's way smaller than all the others you can see.
If you take the edge of a nicer quarter and lay it over the three just right, with a magnifier of some sort, you will understand exactly how It got there. Good eye.
Thank you. I cleaned that area and put it back under the microscope and turned it and saw the lines from the metal, push marks or stretch marks and how it went down a little, and i could tell, but it is so very difficult to see. It is a coumpound microscope.
A compound microscope is a great tool for coins, just hard to get good pics without a built- in camera. I can see the effort you made and you got some pics that got the job done. You might look into an attachment for your scope or camera that will make it easier to take them. Also, study die creation and the minting process. These subjects will help you realize that the damage and wear you find on coins could not have happened at the mint. Pre-strike contact marks are common, they happen when the planchets are upset, annealed and fed to the dies. Many post-strike marks on coins are the result of the way they are handled and transported; contact with other coins in hoppers or bags. Later, they get put into rolls by machines that leave circular scoring on quite a few. Then they get a trip in armored cars and suffer from vibration that leaves scuff marks on the coins. There are many other ways that coins get damaged, including parking lots and fires. Hope this helps...btw, doubleddie.com has some of this info...Spark
