I would like to hear anyone's opinion on the long term increase of the 2008 Bald Eagle coinage. The half is great and will make great Christmas gifts this year. The Dollar I think could rival the 2001 Buffalo. The Gold I don't have a clue. If gold continues to rise it will too, but the mintage seems high. Anyone want to make some predictions?
it all depends on if the coins sell out i think. the half i doubt would since its max mintage is 750,000. but the dollar and gold could. But if it does sell out, the value would increase for the next couple years as people capitaliz on the profit. after that i think the price would fall because of the max mintages of the dollar and gold coins.(500,000 and 100,000) it would be a big bonus if i am wrong on all counts i do hope they all go up and stay up, but i dont think they will. the eagle coins have awsome designs, but the buffalo struck a different chord with people as for a reason to want them.
I agrree with the post above. I don't think you can compare the buffalo to the eagle coins for a couple of reasons. Mintage and appeal. Having said that, it appears many besides myself like the designs so anything is possible. I think the Mint really screwed up by not having the website ready for their release. I see it is still down. I wonder how many buyers decided to forget about it due to this fiasco. I try to give the Mint the benefit of the doubt, but they are making me wonder why anyone would want to purchase anything from them. I realize someone may come on this thread and tell me to quit ordering from the Mint if I don't like it. But that is not the point. I just keep hearing horror stories about their customer service and the fact they keep items available for purchase, then cancel orders when it suits them. I guess we are a captive audience and they are confident we will just turn the other cheek.
I had no problem buying the coins on Tuesday after 2PM. I have never had any problems with the Mint..I've been very happy with the coins that I have bought.
Mintage of the Buffalo was 500,000 for the silver dollar, so same mintage amounts. The appeal for the Eagle is great across all demographics, especially women and children. The Buffalo had very little advertising in comparison to the Eagle. So if the MInt has a sellout using only telephone sales, internet down still, what does that say about popularity?
Never had any significant problems with the Mint... I'll call the bad timing on switching internet providers the exception to the rule lol... As for the topic at hand, hard to say what value will do... this one was heavily advertised and seems to be popular if the phone backup is any indication. I'd be willing to bet there will be decent trends on the silver dollar and the gold five dollar in the long run. Half, maybe not so much. It will probably take a while with mintages so high... the real factor to look for is how popular these will be amongst people who don't regularly collect coins (look how fast the Marine Corps dollar sold out, for example.)
You are correct about the mintages. Guess I was not looking at totals. Proof for the buffalo was about 270,000 and UNC was about 200,000 per a book I have so they are in the same ballpark. Whether the eagle silver dollars sells out is not a given at this point. Hard to guage where we are in terms of numbers sold. It probably does not help that the website has been down. The classic design of the buffalo appealed to a lot of people. Maybe the eagle will too but we will just have to wait and see. I hope I am wrong. Regardless, I like the designs so I bought the coins. I still like the buffalo coins better though. As for the Mint, I am glad many of you have had good experiences with the Mint. I have not. The coins have been great. The customer service for the most part lousy. I will leave it at that.
Got my order in on Monday for the 3-coin set. A quick look at EBay shows recent sale @ $580 with a number set to close in the next few days. Speculation on another board shows they are close to selling out. This one is going to be a winner. Beautiful designs, eagles trump buffalos anyway..................
There have been a couple that sold for $699. I don't quite understand why people would pay a more than $300 premium to avoid a toll-free phone call while the sets are still available. I don't know if this predicts future value or if there will be a meltdown in the future like there was for the First Spouse coins.
The same thing happened with the platinum 10th anniversary set. They were selling for $2900 when the mint had them available for $1950. ???????
Convenience. Some collectors apparently don't like holding for up to an hour to order, while they can order on eBay in less than five minutes. Just a personal choice.
I bought one because I want it to keep it. I don't care if it goes up in value or not because I don't plan to sell it.
What do you sll think about the bronze coin, with mintages at 50,000?. It is really sweet in my opinion. Just wish I could see the reverse. Does any one know if the mint will be selling these individually? This could be the key to this set if there is enough demand. IMHO, all of these designs are probably the best out of all the modern commemoratives. Except the buffalo of course. And maybe another coin or two. CLAW
The bronze medal is from the 2003 National Wildlife Refuge System Centennial Medal Series. I can't tell if these are still offered for sale individually by the mint (or if they are limited mintage) because the mint e-commerce web site is down, but some of them are listed on ebay for less than $10 each. That might be the way to go if you are interested only in the medal.
They are minting 50,000 more of this medal (hate to nitpick, but it's a medal, not a coin) for the sake of the coin and medal set, but these have been minted since 2003 and have no set mintage limit; the Mint can continue to mint more of these as demanded. The 50,000 refers to how many coin and medal packages they're putting together, not necessarily the mintage of the individual medal. So the medal itself won't be the key to anything.... The medals the Mint produces aren't likely to go up much in value because the demand is so low, and even if demand picks up, since they have no set mintage limit, the Mint can just produce more practically indefinitely until it's no longer demanded. (Medals are almost never dated so it's difficult, sometimes impossible, to tell if it's a first run medal or a later restrike.) So if you're looking investment potential, I'd forget about the medal. The coin and medal set though may go up in value if it's heavily demanded... wouldn't bet on it, but sets like this in original packaging get rarer the older it gets... however modern packages like this are unlikey to appreciate significantly during the lifetime of anyone here. Maybe in a genration or two. It is still a nice looking medal though and if you want to collect it just for its own sake, go for it.
