I still think it's a bit severe here. Anywhere from 1.5 points to 3 points is a bit too much in my opinion. If everything was graded that way (there was consistent market grading), then I could learn to accept it; but with the inconsistencies (i.e. coin A is market graded while coin B is conservatively grade and coin C is accurately graded), it just creates too much confusion. And is CAC also participating in the market grading phenomenon? Weren't they supposed to help us identify properly graded coins?
Yea i dont like it one bit. Now there just throwing any grade out that they choose? An MS65 is still only worth about $130 +/- so there reasoning for this grade is just dumb. Why is the + attached to it ??? This be even more egregious than the 67+ FBL Franklin. That coin is 3 and a half points over graded. Ridiculousness !!!!!!!
I was at MS-62 My thoughts exactly. There was no need for the bump. The value would assign itself as long as it graded NT. I was at MS-62. Any grade over MS-63 is ludicrous.
So if market grading is assigning a number to what the market value is (which is no longer grading as much as it is appraising), then why did it not grade MS-68? Did the graders lowball the heck out of the value? Did they believe that MS-65+ was the highest grade where they might not be called out for grossly overgrading? The world may never know...
Maybe they thought it was “only” worth 65+ money but the “market” didn’t read the “market grading” and bid it up to what an accurately graded 65+ CAC with color was worth. Or something of that sort. I really do believe too many just look at the label and sticker and ignore the coin.
The grading “experts” would definitely know that this coin is worth more than $200. I assumed that would be a given since they are the “experts.”
This is a prime example of why "Market Grading" needs to STOP right now. There are too many people who cannot grade and simply go by what the label says. The market goes by the number on the label and then adds the "extra" premium for eye appeal. "Market Grading" does nobody any good. It hurts far more than it helps and it needs to end. The only job the TPGS need to do is tell us the current state of preservation that the coin is in, not "How much it should sell for".
Exactly what I have been saying, but that apparently makes us lunatics to everyone who deems themselves knowledgeable enough to blindly trust the TPGs because the graders are the experts.
I will say that they are good at their job, it's when they try to perform more than their job that it becomes more harmful than helpful. As long as both of the major TPG companies have registry sets, they need to stick to fundamental grading. As the registry owners buy these they get MS-65+ registry points for an MS-62 coin, yet they pay MS-68 prices. Hmm, figure that one out.
I may be the only one but looking at the trueview I would have guessed 65. The GC pics definitely make it look like a 62-63 but having it pass CAC leads me to believe those images aren't showing it in it's best light. We've all imaged coins that make it look a million times worse than it is in hand, I know I had a 66+ CAC that imaged like a 63 at best. And CAC doesn't give it a color bump and sticker it if the contact marks are too many for the grade. I had the exact conversation with JA about a failed MS66 that had great color and he said while the color was nice and certainly not concerning the coin had too many contact marks to sticker at 66. My grade in hand is a 65+ I sent it in for the hell of it since I had a bunch of others going in. I didn't expect it to sticker but I've learned more about grading from coins that didn't sticker thanks to John's amazing service:
That is why I mentioned the TruView. I had a very similar case recently. The TruView picture had no hits while the GC picture was similar to this one. In hand, the hits were there and the coin was closer to GC’s photos.
Yeah trueviews can definitely hide stuff especially when color is involved as they lean further down the glamour shot spectrum. There’s just no way this one looks as bad as GCs pictures but I’ll never know for sure since I’ll never own a coin like this cause I consider that premium absurd x10
Here was that other coin: Vs It graded MS 65 CAC and the GC photos were much closer. I had the coin in-hand and I could see the hits. The TruView almost erased some of the hits.
Where is the evidence of this? How many coins have you purchased from GC? I have purchased many coins from GC and their photos have been some of the more accurate and consistent in respect to the grade. Obviously some of the color can’t be captured for all coins, but even their toners are well depicted.
I was wondering what your excuse would be for this one. Nice try but, its up, its sailing wide, he misses, wide left. No good
