Please take a look at this 1880-O morgan dollar and render your opinion on a grade. Coin has a nice golden toning. Thanks.
I'd call it an MS-60. I believe it's in a GSA holder, but too many marks to qualify for any grade above 61 to be sure. I think what you see Ben is incomplete strike, but as you know, it's hard to say from a picture.
Actually took that coin out of the holder (not a gsa holder). Just a coinworld holder that someone put a grade on themselves I guess. I needed a 5th coin to send to ANACS for the economy tier so I sent that one in this afternoon. Coin looks nicer in hand and I really like that toning. I was thinking it might go anywhere between ms-61 to ms-63. Wanted to see how the new ANACS is and I had a few key date lincolns I wanted to get authenicated and graded. Thanks for everyones opinion. Any guess from you GDJMSP? You were right on with the last Morgans I put up.
Thanks everyone for your opinions and nice comments. ANACS should have it Monday and I should have it back in a month or so and pass what they graded it. Regardless of grade (high AU to MS63) I am happy with the coin for it's eye appeal and it will be a keeper in my collection. :thumb:
I just wanted the folks to know that it was not a GSA. As for grade, the coin has 65 details for an O mint coin. But there is something going on in the fields on that coin and based on the pics I can't tell what it is. It could be cleaning marks it could be scuff marks - just can't tell. But they will make the difference in the grade and what it says on the label.
Thanks. I see what you are talking about especially on the reverse at the 3 o'clock position. Looks like scuff marks to me. Gets accented due to the toning on the coin. Previous owner had it labeled ms-65 on the slab. Hopefully ANACS goes ms-63 to ms-65 not cleaned. Thanks Becky for pointing out the micro O. Was not aware it was the variety.
Well after over 2 months at ANACS got the grades back. Coin came back artifically toned 58 details. Well that was a bummer. 1914-D Lincoln came back 30 details cleaned. Knew it was cleaned but was hoping 35-40. 1970-s small date lincoln which I got out of a mint set came back ms64. 1917 Walking liberty half au58 details cleaned. Thought It might of been lightly cleaned but still a nice coins. Last a 1883-O morgan MS65. Not too bad but a bit dissappointed on the 1880-O.
I think you got the shaft on the Morgie's details. It should have at least got a 64 details, if not better. Here's an old ANACS of mine that got a MS-66, for reference.
grade opinions.... i would have thought 63. as far as the tpg's...............different graders different opinions.
