Definitely counterfeit or let's just say fake.. Morgans were minted starting in 1878 so it is impossible to have one paired up with a 1842 seated liberty

Now to find out if it's at least silver. Passed the magnet test.

FYI, the guy that designed the Morgan dollar, George T. Morgan, was -3 yrs old when this supposedly was minted.

Labor laws have changed a lot since 1842.

If It can be determined that this piece is indeed silver, then perhaps it is a fantasy piece.

    What? o_O
Don't you think it is a fantasy piece? We all just informed you that is not authentic.

Op is probably thinking of a Daniel Carr fantasy piece instead of it just being a fake junk coin looking object made as someone's fantasy.

I think it is just a poorly attempted chinese fake. Heavily casted surfaces and color are consistent with the fakes on ebay.

Are the photos of the same coin? Just saying. Mirror?

What about the weight? Although they've been getting better at matching the weight with bogus alloys, in general the Chinese and similar modern copies will not be close enough in weight to fool anyone - on that metric, at least - well outside the range of expected standard variation.
(Also note how inconsistent and sloppy the denticles of the reverse border are rendered.)

I saw one on a facebook post. The guy posted it along with two other fakes. Sometimes I think they post pics of fake coins with 'my grandfather gave me this, does anyone know anything about it?' just to see if someone will fall for it.

Too bad they didn't gold plate it also. Then we'd really have something to discuss!:p:eek:

Wasn't this common in the early Chinese fakes with non-matching side ?
