1953 Cuba Jose Marti 100th Anniversary, .900 Fine Gold, Non-Denominated Medal/Coin

Hello everyone,

This is my first post here, so I hope I am doing it right.

I recently purchased this coin, or more properly medal, commemorating the 100th anniversary of the birth of Jose Marti. Weighs 14.9 grams, and is minted in .900 fine gold. Edge is reeded, and the rim looks to be rather deep. Definitely appears to be polished, and has some rim dings. Possibly ex-jewelry.

I am quite familiar with coins of Cuba, however I have never seen a gold piece with the Marti motif on it.

Any ideas as to rarity, mintage, and/or value?

Fascinating! Same design as the peso, but I've never heard of a gold version.

 

Indeed, I am fascinated by it as well. I have searched all over, and cannot find one like it, nor any records indicating that gold was minted in 1953 by Cuba. Even more interesting is that this was likely minted by the U.S. Mint.

 

I would say it's a medal. tried researching it and nothing. a real mystery hmmmm.

ORO LEY 900 looks like it was added.
Probably a plated altered silver original version. IMHO

 

This is half of the size of the silver One Peso, and weighs about 1/3 less, so definitely not a plated Peso.

 

If it helps, a 50 Centavos of the same obverse design weighs 12.5 grams on my scale, with this gold medal/coin weighing 14.9 grams. Also, the gold is ever so slightly smaller than the 50c. Would NGC know what it is if I were to send it in to them for certification?
