Assuming this hole punch was inflicted outside of the minting process, but thought I'd check.

Looks like damage. After all, there is a 50 year interval in which someone could have done that.

Thank you! I have a number of coins inherited recently, for the different denominations and years, is it best to start a new thread for each I have questions on and is there a recommended jpg setting for the pictures?
I am trying to find answers first before posting so as not to inundate.
    Thanks!

Ideally pics should be large enough to clearly see what you are asking about.
Your first pic wasn't since I couldn't tell if it was a hole (as you said) or a dent.

    Also focus must be sharp.
The finer the details you are asking about the harder they will be able to be seen if the focus is not good.

Plus crop the image close to the coin.

I like 600dpi jpg images since that's TOO much for a coin to fit on the screen and I can resize it down to screen size.
And 600 dpi is good for many smaller details.
Once in a while you may have to go to 1200dpi for really small details.

One thing I do is look at my images BEFORE I post them.
If I wouldn't buy the item from those images then they are not good enough to ask questions about.

I refer to quarter sized coins with holes as CHEATERS. They are tied to a fishing line and used to get your money back from video games and vending machines. Sometimes the line is still attached to the coin when you find them. If the coin is noticeably more worn on one side then someone used it as a birth year or anniversary necklace.

Incorrect title on my part. It was a dent that looked a lot like a result of an attempted hole punch. Hopefully this photo is better

I have SHOT coins before with a BB GUN, leaving that identical mark.
