I wanted to share with the forum a very non-coin event...this week went off with a bad start. Tuesday I wrecked my truck. My rear end slid out and I lost control. As the truck began spinning the passenger side rear corner struck the barrier between northbound and southbound traffic. When the rear end hit the barrier it bounced off then the front passenger side struck the barrier and the truck fell over on the driver's side. I was the only one in the truck, no other vehicles were involved and I was not hurt. I had to climb out my passenger side door then climb down the bottom of my truck. So what does this have to do with ancient coins? Well these two came in the mail today and was super happy with both: THESSALY, Larissa. Circa 450/40-420 BC. AR Drachm, 20mm, 5.9g, 6h. Obv.: The hero Thessalos, with petasos and chlamys hanging around neck, restraining bull left by band held around its head; plant to left and below; TO in exergue. Rev.: ΛΑ / P / IΣA; Bridled horse rearing right within incuse square. THESSALY, Thessalian League. AR Stater, 21mm, 5.7g, 12h; 196-146 BC Obv.: Laureate head of Zeus right. Rev.: ΘEΣΣA-ΛΩN; Athena Itonia walking right, brandishing spear and holding shield; magistrates ΣΩΣI-ΠATΡOΣ above, ΓOΡΓΩΠAΣ below. Is it wrong I wanted both of these coins because of coins I already had? Thessaly, Larissa AR Drachm, 6.0g, 20mm, 12h; c. 380-365 BC. Obv.: Head of the nymph Larissa facing slightly right, wearing ampyx, earring, and necklace. Rev.: [ΛAPI]-ΣAIΩN, horse grazing right. This coin had it's own coins that inspired it...maybe later... Thessalian League, 2nd-1st BC AE, trichalkon, 20mm, 5.3g; 12h Obv.: Laureate head of Apollo right Rev.: ΘΕΣΣ / ΛΩΝ; Athena Itonia striding right, hurling spear held in her right hand, shield on her left arm; ΘΡΑ in right field above, owl in left Thessaly. Magnetes. AE19, 7.23g, 196-146 BC Obv: Laureate head of Zeus right. Rev: ΜΑΓΝΗΤΩΝ; The centaur Chiron advancing right, holding branch over shoulder; star below. I love my two new coins! The drachm featuring the mythic scene and the relief and detail is superb. The stater has great surfaces and awesome toning. Feel free to post anything you think is relevant - Thessaly, coins that made you want other coins...crashed trucks...
I love that ancient rodeo coin! That dudes hat is airborne as he tangles with that bull...cool scene! You got some awesome coins, and sounds like that accident could have been much worse...so chalk this week up as a win @Jwt708
I love the Thessalian coins, especially that excellent drachm, but I think the important thing here is that you’re okay. Here’s a little bonanza of Thessalian bronzes that arrived recently. I haven’t had the time to go through them all in detail, but I’m definitely going to have fun with them.
Amazing coins.. and glad you were driving a big vehicle like that in this situation - may not have walked away otherwise. Hopefully insurance comes through!
Zumbly - Those are incredible coins - congrats. I also like your coin display case - looks homemade?.. I do some amateur woodworking and am looking at some designs.. would love to see more to get some ideas!
I’m afraid woodworking is not one of my skills. I bought it from Peter Nichols in the UK. His website shows many other coin cabinets of various sizes and designs.
Great coins, but very sorry about the truck. If it is any comfort, even with a lot of damage it still looks a lot better than my car!
Not too bad considering what happened to you. I'm glad that you came out of it safe. Nice coins, if that is a consolation.
Jwt708. Sorry about the bad news, with your truck. It could have been far worse, but it wasn't. And the cloud had a silver lining, in the shape of two, very nice, ancient coins. Let's hope you get over your shock, soon, too.
