Extremely scratched die on Wyoming quarter

Hello, Meow joined this forum today to share a very interesting find Meow just made. Meow bought a roll of P mint Wyoming quarters and opened it to see what was there. Nothing of note Meow thought, until Meow found this REALLY scratched up one. Meow thought, how would a defaced quarter get into a new roll? BUT, under closer examination something seemed odd about it, and Meow suspected it could be a messed up die. It seems so, as Meow found a total of three quarters just like it. So it must be that somehow a die got really scratched up, and was used to make an unknown number of coins. Meow has been CRH for six months, and this is the most unusual find this Cat has made.

Note: The first image is to show as much as possible how the coin is affected. The following three images are of three different coins taken at the same angle. WIN_20181017_04_23_53_Pro.jpg WIN_20181017_04_21_45_Pro.jpg WIN_20181017_04_22_01_Pro.jpg WIN_20181017_04_22_25_Pro.jpg

Meow.. Looks like PMD - Post Mint Damage Cat scratches! :cat:

Can you show the other 2 quarters?
They should match up if it really is from the same die.

Not sure, lighting highlighted and shadows does look like the lines could ne raised on the coin. Pictures of the other two coins would help. If the lines are the same on all three that would definitely indicate a die issue.

Honestly Meow cant tell if the lines are raised or not. But imagine if someone would scratch up 3 quarters in the identical way, for no reason. If you look closely, each coin has unique bagmarks, scuffs, and dings. They are three different quarters, but the multitude of scratches are identical.

Then it's die damage/scratches if it's present like that on all coins.

Yes Meow thought a coin made with such a scratched die was very very unusual find.

Yep that confirms it, some mint worker did a HORRIBLE job at probably polishing out a clashmark. Makes you wonder why they would think this is better than a clashmark?

Yea if Meow found only one, Meow would have dismissed it; But in the end Meow found three. And the only reason Meow suspected a die issue because it was in a OBW roll. And honestly, the reason Meow could figure it out was because Meow learned so much from the other coin forum.

Oh, and there is a shiny spot on all three in the middle of Washington's jaw. Meow cant explain that. It is not a die break, as it is incuse on the coin. It maybe grease on the die, but it is a bit deeper that what Meow sees in typical grease on die coins. Could it be possible that a lump of grease made that impression?

Can you post a pic of the area?

It is visible in the pictures. In the middle of the jawline, there is a pickle shaped shiny spot on all three coins. It is a incuse mark. Looks a lot like grease. But it is a little deeper than what Meow thought grease did,

Looks like a pretty deep effect of grease on the die. I've seen coins in the past that had similar marks caused by grease.

    rickmp Frequently flatulent.

I'd argue with everyone else that all of those photos are of one coin and that those are scratches on the coin, but you are the expert, Kitty.

They look like three different coins to me. Note the stain on one coin next to LIBERTY, and how the other two don't have such a stain.
