Is this natural or artificial toning. The change in colors seems to abrupt, so I think it is artificial, but I want to know what you guys think. Thanks!
Yep, natural. Scroll down to the 1879 obverse in the color mapping section.http://www.jhonecash.com/research/sunnywood_classification.asp
Seriously? That is a quintessential bag toned Morgan. The fact that you don't know that and your moniker is toned_morgan confuses me greatly.
Here's the obverse. What would you grade it at? Again, just to get your opinions. I'm thinking MS64 or maybe 65 just from the toning helping it up a bit.
Sorry, UNC details then. Even without the scratch I’d have said MS63/64 star - weak strike, many marks in Liberty’s face and not enough luster for a gem grade.
A pic from a different angle of the obv would help. Hard to tell how the cartwheel luster is. Reverse is NT.
63 at best possibly details because of the scratch and not worth $50 to me. Yes 100% natural bag tone. The thickness in each band is determined by how steep the coin was tilted in correlation to the material of the bag, how close it is to the material and other factors as well. Thats why some coins have only a few colors and others have a whole rainbow. Im not good at explaining edited so im not sure if this is a reply fail or not
