There are so many ways to store ancient coins and everybody has their own opinion. How do you store your ancients and why do you choose to store them that way. Me, I'm currently using paper envelopes. The dealer that I learned about ancient coins from (Bob Novak of Pantheon Galleries) always told me that was the best method of storage for storing ancients long term. It's worked out well for me so far (even though it's pretty old school ). Some wooden coin cabinets have definitely intrigued me lately though.
I use mylar 2x2's, with slips attributing them printed from Moneta... ....ok, I lied. They're either in cardboard 2x2's or attributed by an RIC # scribbled on a scrap of paper in a mylar envelope. But I'm getting Moneta soon, and then I'll be telling the truth. :-D
I'm using Saflips. I figure if they're good enough for museums to use they're good enough for my little collection. I tried envelopes & they worked fine too, but I liked being able to view the coin without removing it. I've considered some type of tray setup, but never looked into it very much. Some of the coin cabinets are nice, but to $$$$$ for me.
Brian, Have you looked at these? I think they're really nice looking and depending on what you collect, you could get a tray set up that would fit quite a few coins. The two things I'm always concerned about with cabinets: environment control (e.g. humity) and leaving something out for someone to steal. For about the price of one nice coin, you could get a cabinet. I configured one with the model I linked to that would hold 106 coins in the 8 trays. I don't think I'll have that many for a while...and if I do, I would just put the nicer stuff in the cabinet. That particular model says it will hold 220, but that's with the trays with the smallest openings.
Tim, Yeah I like the stuff he makes, but apparently (according to someone on Ancients.info) he's said he doesn't ship to the US due to exportation issues.
those are cool cases!!! very nice indeed! I wonder what other coins might fit in the slots? also, as for shipping - i wonder if a fellow cointalk member could act as a middle man.
I picked other because I PVC flips if there not slabed but I also have many coins in those card board and pvc free stapled flips. I leave the slabbed SLABBED and the Mint stuff in the stock packages as well I use hard and paper rolls.
Hello, I use coin cases like Abafil. With velvet trays, they are better than "plastic" ones as they are less abrasive for coins. Of course they are expensive, so you would not use them for slugs. Cucumbor
Hey Cucumbor...which is kind of funny since I just ate some cucumbor. :eat: Do you have to keep those trays flat when you transport them? Or maybe you just keep them at home for display purposes.
Hello tcore, I really don't know wether tcore is eatable or not.... You can transport easily the cases with coins in them. You just have to put a sheet of paper between the lid and the first plate to avoid "travlling coins" Cucumbor
