Hello, i've recently encountered what by all appearances seems to be a Cupro-nickle George V penny. After having done some googling I've found nothing apart from some articles about a cupro-nickle 1919 penny which went on sale a few years ago. what are your thoughts? cheers
Just weighed it. It weighs 11.4g. Yeah that's what I also thought. But, it really doesn't look plated. Can't see any copper showing through and there a fair few little knicks and dents
yeah good point. it does look slightly thicker than a normal penny. i've added a few more pictures taken with and SLR. hopefully a little clearer. so you think the extra 2 grams are most likely added because of a nickel plating?
I have seen several copies of different small British coins that were primarily made for jewelry. They are usually under or over weight.
Plating would not increase the weight by 2 grams. There is a suspicious seam on one of the edges. Even if this was an off metal, if the size was the same, the weight would not be that much diff. from bronze to cupro nickel. Since it is thicker it may a jewelry piece (facsimile) as Tommy mentioned.
Ahh interesting. This would make sense. It's a brilliant copy I must say. Great detail. But yeah as shown in the pic from Michael... Seems the edges generally look a bit off. They look a little like they have been filed, quite faintly but visibly. Also on the edges to the left and right of the bust you can see slight indents.
