I recently traded my 09 S VDB for 2 certified 1916 d Merc's and this 1799 Dollar. Tell me what you think about her. I know she has a big X scratch on her face. I looked up the diagnostics of known counterfiets and this one doesn't have them. I can always return her. Let me know what you guys think. Thanks Tom

Normally, what appears to be tool marks at the top of the letters would bother me. But quite honestly I don't know the diagnostics for these and the marks may be quite normal or even a mark of authenticity. I just don't know.

If legit, you made out like a bandit !!!!

I have no idea on these old dollars, I myself would not buy raw........

EDIT....I cried when I found out the SVDB was gone already, the open forum is there and I woulda grabbed it from you, but you did real well !!!

I am sorry but I believe that it is a counterfeit! The coin appears very porous on both the Obverse and Reverse. The lines in the upper portion of the Shield are not horizontal as they should be and and are actually tiltled somewhat. I believe that this is one of the diagnostics for detecting fakes in the Bust Dollars with the Heraldic Eagle. Also, note the the vertical bars in the Shield appear to be solid when they should have either 4 or 5 lines in each one.

I agree with Frank. It looks very suspect to me.

The upper portion of the shield on this coin is deceptive from the photos. My camera made this area look blurry. I will take a close up photo.

I checked the PCGS counterfeit guide and it shows the diagnostics for the non genuine coins and this one doesn't have any of them. This coin is severely cleaned and damaged, so who knows you may be right. But I hope not. =)

I believe that is metal flow, but like I said I could be wrong.

I really hope your right. I was extremely nervous and almost didn't do the deal. I know a little about bust dollars but not enough to purchase one which is why I haven't. The only reason I did the deal was because I knew I could take it back to my friend, and I already got 2 certified 16 d's out of the deal. I swore up and down the whole time it is real or so it better be so he didn't have to go beat up our local dealer.

    Love 'em !

Recently, there was a thread about "the ugliest portrait of Liberty on US Coins". If we had about the BEST portrait, for me it would be the Draped Bust series hands down.

With those scratches, it can't be certified*. I think it's VG details, cleaned, scratched, net G.

For those that love the Draped Bust series, I have found the 50c to be quite a bargain. Less cost than the Dollar coins, as one might expect...

... but also less than the 25c, 10c, or H10c ! Surprising to some, but the 50c were very high mintage. Even in F / VF grades they aren't too spendy.

    * edit - except by NCS and ANACS.

Give this guy a few weeks, he will probably come back to me asking for me to buy it back. He gets hard up for money,,, well to make a long story short. His girlfriend is a crackhead... litterally. She stole a lot of coins from him, mostly 1999 and 2000 state quarter rolls to spend on drugs. He finally got rid of her but who knows. He is 61 years old and he thinks she likes him for him.. oh btw she is 28. Wierd huh!

But Ill get off of my soapbox. If he decides to sell it back to me Ill let you know and give you first crack at her ok!

    tdec,

Yes, the pictures were very misleading as the vertical bands appeared to be solid! I hope that the coin is genuine but there is still the question of the coin being very porous.

Its because I minimized the pics to save space. I really hope it is the real deal. Tom
