Not quite sure what this is... It's completely smooth on the obverse but their is still some shadowing... Reverse seems fine. Any guesses?
Interesting.. Looks to be Struck Through Die Cap But not completely sure. Might also be a Struck through grease. Where did you find it?
I think that it has good promise to be a "Struck though a Capped Die". The weakness of design is quite even across the whole obverse. Uneven weakness is a hallmark of most grease strikes. Your coin is most likely a early stage die cap. http://www.error-ref.com/struck_through_a_late_stage_die_cap/
The rim looks about right as it is still raised. I thought about it and if it were damaged the rim would of been affected also. Just my opinion.
I’m in the capped die camp. Too bad he doesn’t have a birth certificate (date). Here at the Upstate New York Home for Disadvantaged Coins we could waive the age requirement. He could live & frolic with similar types and make new friends. A no judgement zone. And welcome to Coin Talk
What is a die cap. Is that when their seting up a new die? Not enough pressure yet. Why would reverse be fine?
It's not struck thru a Die Cap, imo. It's been buffed, or something similar, to the obverse. It does not have the look or 'fabric' of a struck thru late stage die cap......
What did I start hehe Found it in a jar of pennies from the in laws here in Phoenix so basically pocket change. weights in at 2.49gm Ha and Thank you! Sorry if I didn't reply back to anyone directly, these were the main questions/welcomes I saw Thank you all very much! With the weight that makes it a 1983-2008 (when they changed to young Lincoln then shields) correct?? Next question then is what does the weight (2.49g) have to do with it? Sounds like we've found ourselves in the camp of damage and not something fun and exciting then?
Right so, I understand the composition would help us potentially date it but would it do anything in the way of helping identify anything else about it other than a date range?
It might have, really not sure what advantage it was in this situation. unless someone has a theory as to how the damage happened.
