Since at least 2016 we've been chatting now and again about Moon Landing coins.
    They are finally here.

excerpts from the Mint Press Release:
    https://www.usmint.gov/news/press-r...1-50th-anniversary-commemorative-coin-program
The obverse and reverse designs will be featured on the four coins in the program:
    • a $5 gold coin,
    • a standard size $1 silver coin,
    • a half dollar clad coin,
    • and a five ounce $1 silver proof coin.
In a manufacturing first for the Mint, the five ounce silver proof coin will be curved, as will the other coins in the program.

So now both commem sets for 2019 have been announced. Looks like the moon landing set will be first and the american legion set will be second (if I'm reading the press releases correctly). And it looks like both sets will be the typical half/dollar/$5 tri-fecta with the moon set offering the additional 5 ounce silver. I'm looking forward to the curved designs for the moon sets as I missed out on the baseball set back in 2014. It is unusual that the mint would offer two gold $5's in the same year. They did it in 2016 with the Mark Twain and National Parks offerings. Before that, the last year with multiple gold offerings was 1997.

I wonder if they are going to curve the gold coin?

Either way, I'm going to buy the Full Set ... assuming there isn't one of those 5 second all sold scenarios.

I mean it all depends on mintages and household limits, but it seems very possible it could sell out fast. Should be a very popular set.

Did the metal fly to the moon? Onset question. I own a small medal from a previous flight. I’m assuming not, but I’d buy one if it were the case.

We knew about the helmet side, and I neither love nor hate the footprint side. It's not what I expected to see. Let's leave it at that for now.

I predict a rocketing fast sellout :hungover:
Then the secondary market will push the prices to the Moon,
and as time passes the prices will have a soft landing back to normal Earth levels. o_O

That's assuming @V. Kurt Bellman doesn't buy them all. :nailbiting: He seems "Over the Moon" about them.

    :)

I'm predicting high limits that won't endanger not being able to get what you want. Maybe the 5 ounce will be scarce.

Instead of mercury Gemini Apollo, how about one small step for man. Just sayin.

While the footprint is an iconic symbol, for a coin design it's lazy.

Frankly, when I first saw the reverse, my eye said “There’s a beetle on that coin.”

Overall, to me, it’s s continuation of the trend of our coinage looking more like it was drawn, rather than engraved. Call me old fashioned and a fossil if you wish.

I’m sure I’ll try to buy something. But what, I don’t know.
