    Dear fellow coin lovers,

I have a coin I recently purchased and shortly after looking in the loop.

I noticed green tinge on further magnification. It looks like fungi or something above the FH and by the eagle head.

I am not sure if the pictures included can help you see what I am looking at with the loop. I will try and upload better pictures shortly.

Is it possible for the coin to loose it’s value because of this type of green growth? Could it one day be covered in green stuff?

I am looking for your expert opinions as I am a noob and this is the first time this has happened to me so far on a slabbed coin.

I really appreciate and Love all the community’s help on this one.

    Thanks in advance.

    Sincerely,

    StrongCoins33.

You may want to look into NGC restoration services and get a point of view from them.

Looks like good old polyvinyl chloride (PVC) that got overlooked by the graders. Take up NGC on their grading guarantee.

Even though the coin is in a air tight slab, not much more can grow right? I figure with oxygen depleted nothing will get out of hand?

It will be slowed down. It should be ok, but you'll always know it's there.

I have found that holding a coin at a bit of a distance at a near flat angle shows if there is any green haze on them.

Dear friends, we sent the coin to get checked by NGC and it’s been three weeks now. It may take some time but they are checking with an appearance review to see if they can either solve it or cover us under buyer guarantee. Because it’s a free appearance review, we are told to call in and it’s in queue and can take up to two months to be resolved or looked at.

Now I have new problem. The green monster has appeared again this time on a newly graded coin by PCGS.
I have recently acquired a gold coin from a good friend to resell. But Could this also have pvc damage on a gold coin?

Here are the pictures. Please let me know if this makes sense to any of you. Thank you very much & God Bless! 0BCC4703-9FB3-432B-A80B-BAA55C3FFB7F.jpeg

What happened with the last coin?

As to this one, I had to research to be sure, but gold cannot get PVC. However, some of the alloy on the surface could.

My guess on the gold dollar is just some dirt with a green hue. Looks to be on the coin rather that path of the coin.

Ok this helps me big because I know it has copper in it and it’s definitely green. Look like it’s crystals and it could be eating the rim of the coin.
I wonder if PCGS will also protect me on this coin.

Well about the silver quarter, I sent that coin to NGC for appearance review and it will take two months but I have to call and check. It’s been three weeks since it’s been shipped and received.

However, it’s free for this service but they will see if they can fix the pvc or find some alternative. We spoke with:

    Who was very professional.
And we mentioned it should be under the guarantee.
It’s under the name my wife Anisha Patel for now because I am still waiting for them to approve my ANA membership so I can submit coins for free in the future.

For years I kept my coins in my safe. A safe that also happens to store my firearms. I had a stunning MS-64 SLQ that I noticed was having a rapidly growing nasty looking spunge that is quite reminiscent of what you are experiencing. It grew rather rapidly too. It was @GDJMSP that pointed out to me the fumes from the firearm cleaning chemicals attacked our coins. It made sense and I separated my coins from my firearms and haven't experienced that problem since.... Any chance your coins are stored near firearms?
