This was in my latest batch of uncleaned coins. I "think" it is a Claudius II but I can't tell for certain. I haven't been able to find anything on wildwinds or on a couple other sites that I have for references. It is a wee bit hard to get a good picture of due to the shiny silver on both sides. There is more detail on the coin than what shows in the pictures. Unfortunately most of the Legends are gone. If anyone can help point me in the right direction, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

I see what looks like icky pustules on his neck, so maybe it's Gallienus with his trademark beard?

Medical term? Considering the frequency of poor legends on coins of the period, a good skill to develop is to learn to recognize Gallienus and Claudius by portraits on the small and poorly made AE antoniniani. Both have several 'looks' from their various mints but relatively few of them look much like the other emperor.

    Thanks both of you!
I've gotten pretty good with the later bronzes but these are still tricky.
I wonder what that nasty abomination of a beard looked like in real life. Perhaps things are better left to history.

Nice! Where do you get you're uncleaned batches? I got some from DirtyOldCoins (the HolyLand ones) and most are unrecognizable metal slugs...

Most of the ones I got from them were garbage as well.

    Here's a bust of Gallienus:

Icky beard visible. He has kind of a worried look with a furrowed brow. And he had lots of things to be worried about!

So these coins weren't from dirtyoldcoins. The ones I go from them were 99% garbage. I got these from another place and the quality has been much better...Though I only have 2 sources to compare from :p
