Did you read the Private Message I sent you? I also apologized. It's good to do this. Let's continue on and be great, educating, respectful and freindly CT members!

We all prefer the newbies who come for advice on a coin they "think" might be worth something, and we tell them it isn't, and they accept it. Sure, we believe they should do the research first and learn before coming here, but for some, this is easier than doing that. We might want to criticize them for asking the easy questions, but we shouldn't. It's like when I go to the hardware store looking for something specific. Rather than run all over the store looking for it, I'll ask for help. Saves time and money, and I'm outta there! Still, it doesn't mean we shouldn't point them to the resources out there. I've bookmarked many links you all have offered to advance my learning. And I thank all of you for that.

For all intents and purposes, asking on forums IS doing the research in modern times.

Who's the winner - the numismatic or the coin collector ??? :hungover:

I do too and goes back well before he finally shared his identity with the open forum. It wasn't a slight, but let's be honest here: no one but Insider can convey pretty much anything using only smilies. ;)

There's a huge difference between forcing a retailer to shoulder the perfectly reasonable burden you're paying them for, and simply expecting those participating on a volunteer forum to eagerly do the same, often repeatedly. This, of course, doesn't even take those who throw tantrums or play victim into consideration. I cannot deny that a few newcomers are often treated rather harshly, but often there's more to it, sometimes in the form of a history with the individual from other threads. Oftentimes, a quick look at someone's posting history can be an enlightening experience, but in cases where it's unwarranted, someone usually steps up and/or calls others on it.

Anyone who pays fair attention to this sort of thing has to realize there are many who simply will not do for themselves no matter how much assistance is offered. On the other hand there is many examples of someone who came here asking the same basic questions, took the advice given to heart, and have shown exactly what can happen people both appreciate and take advice seriously. This forum should be a two-way street instead of the numismatic equivalent of Romper Room. Sometimes folks reap what they sow.

Those who want to spend their forum time answering the same basic questions again and again for the same person is more than welcome to do so. No one is going to stop them, but the sad fact is that more often than not, the people screaming loudest about the supposed mistreatment of newcomers are also the ones who give the least. I'm not saying this is the case with you, John, but is something we've seen again and again. Unfortunately, it's easier to berate others actually trying to help than it is to invest our own energies into following their lead.

(Actually, I posted to the wrong thread and don't know how to delete it, so I erased most of it. My apologies)

I had not considered past experience with a poster on other threads. That does change the map. And do I dare admit a certain (sick) pleasure in seeing someone who refuses to accept the opinions of many get slapped down? Nawwww!:angelic:

I may be one of those that bicker, and if I am I would expect that folks tell me so. I think it is just my demeanor, I was taught to stand up for the folks being mistreated. When I see it I can't help to stand up for them.
Especially those that have spent there time to answer questions that others refuse to do, then berate them for their answer. I try but I believe I am set in my ways.

This combination: :bucktooth::troll: is probably the most expressive and accurate use of smileys I've ever seen used by anyone on this site. Kudos @Insider
