Up for auction was an 1851 3 Cent Silver in CCGS MS-65... what did I pay (including the 17.5% buyer's premium and $5 shipping/handling (take that Stacks & Heritage))???? CCGS (Certified Coin Grading Service) is one of the dozen or so slabbing "services" using the IGS Shells, which are the ex NTC (Numistrust) shells… these guys don't rate an album, they get a repurposed biscotti bucket: 1851 3CS are very common (1st year, over 11 million minted). It's only in the very highest grades that they get pricey. coinprices.com (the Greysheet Consumer Price Guide) has the 1851 at VF20 $52, MS60 $247, MS62 $273, MS63 $312, MS65 at $702. PCGS has VF20 $60, MS60 $225, MS62 $245, MS63 $275 and MS65 $725 NCG has VF $60, MS60 $210, MS62 $250 MS63 $330, MS65 $950 This isn't MS-65, but it's not THAT bad... provisionally I'm going to call it MS-63 before GTG... Full Slab: So, what did I pay???
Also as promised, I received the coin I was waiting for today. I was so excited to finally get one of these. I'm sorry if we have two going at once, but we did have a tie and I guessed first. LOL Anyway this is a 1942-S Mercury Dime graded MS-65 and housed in an NGC White label Generation 2.0 holder. The gold embossed logo is printed on the outside of the holder. It's actually the 3rd iteration of holder from NGC as the 2.1 holder was the transition from the black to this holder. The 2.1 has the NGC logo printed on the insert rather than the plastic shell. The easiest way to tell is the tell tale shadow of the 2.0 and lack of shadow on the 2.1. The 2.0 is not as rare as the 2.1, but there are not very many of these beauties left. A typical MS-65 1942-S Mercury Dime sells for around $20.00, what did I pay for this one?
$85 on the Trime $200 on the Mercury Dime @GoldBug999 yep let's do both for this round and go back to one afterwards.
Also, congratulations @jtlee321 ! I know you have been looking for one of those white NGC holders for a while and you found a beauty!
Thanks, now I just have to find myself a 2.1 That one will probably hurt, unless I can get lucky and cherrypick one. I won't hold my breath though.
@ddddd you are the winner on my NGC 2.0 Mercury Dime. I paid $195.75 after my eBay bucks discount of 10%.
Let's wait on @Burton Strauss III for his reveal and then we'll tally up the points and let the winner of that one post next.
