Yes sorry. I heard that some 1943 nickels were struck on a non silver planchette and they were supposed to have certain percentage of silver in them from 42-45. Sorry if it doesn’t make sense but that’s why I’m asking to find out.

    Are we over thinking this?
    Large reverse Mintmark= 35% silver
No Large reverse mintmark= 0% Silver

We absolutely are....there are some members on this forum who have overthought this exact same topic through multiple threads and over several months.

It is most likely 35% silver. The war nickels usually have a different look about them. Because of the composition. Nickels are 75% copper and 25% nickel.
But the war nickels are 35% silver 9% manganese and 56% copper.

Planchette is the original word ( french) degradated to planchet when referring primarily to coins in English speaking countries unless someone finds a RARE mint error where the coin was "Accidently" struck on a Ouija board planchette and Graded by your favorite TPG.

Specific gravity and/or an XRF test. SG of coppernickel is 8.92 War nickels are between 9.25 and 9.32. XRF will show either high percentage of nickel or a high percentage of silver should be definitive either way.

I seem to recall that nickel is slightly magnetic. I don't have a magnet nearby, but if this is, in fact, true, then bring a magnet near a coin of each composition and see if the nickel one moves at all. Anyone want to try this out?
