    Hello!
I recently came across this ancient coin. I was told it was possibly roman or byzantine, but I can't seem to be able to identify it. Any help would be very much appreciated.

Valentinian I AE 3 364-375 CE, reverse: Restitvtor Reip
mintmark looks to be Consta, so possibly Arles, France, might be Constantinople though. These LRB types are incredibly common.

Thank you, that definitely helps! There's a lot of wear. It was supposed to come museum quality, clearly that isn't the case.

"Museum quality" is all advertising, museum quality is undefinable, plenty of museum objects are in horrid condition.

Welcome to the Ancients Forum, @Witch Slapped ! Interesting coin and I'll agree with @roman99 on the attribution. Also, you won't be witch slapped here—you'll be treated with the utmost kindness and respect—most of the time ;)

Well thank you both kindly. I'm very new to the coin scene, I've always been a collector of oddities especially anything ancient, which is what brought me to this coin. Regardless of its rarity, it's still fantastic to own a piece of history this ancient.

Yes it is fantastic. If you are new to ancient coins and you would like to acquire a few more, it’s pretty amazing how affordable many of them are. This site offers good advice about where to buy ancient coins. You will probably find options in much better condition for not much more than you paid for this first coin.

Going to VCoins.com and simply searching for late imperial emperors such as Constantine or Valentinian can show you a wealth of options, from $20 to $20,000.
