Here's where I show my ignorance in this series. I'm in the 45/50 ballpark. I will give it the bump to 50.
I really, strongly dislike the obviously dipped and retoning surfaces. That orangey splotchy look around the edges with the centers so pale is a clear sign of a dipped and retoning coin. Honestly, you need to have that conserved to stabilize the surfaces, because in 10 years that is going to be dark and spotty and really ugly. As for the wear, it is a borderline EF-45/AU-50. There appears to be a good amount of luster, but the wear on the eagle's wings drives the grade down. Given the dip, paleness, and wear, I personally would max this coin out at 45. However, I realize that the TPG's may have been loose on this coin an overgraded it as AU. There is a good bit of luster present, which helps the grade. The toned look is attractive to some. There are plenty of people that would grade this as AU. That would be a mistake, in my opinion.
AU-53. To be honest, not a fan of the cleaning/retoning. I like the die cracks on the reverse though.
There was an old cleaning at some point, but the halo effect on this coin is not very strong, so I think the coin is market acceptable. I see a few traces of wear at the high points. I'm going to guess: Grade: AU53 Variety: WB-11
