  1. Not sure if doubled or if S mint mark is over a D mint mark

Better pics would help but I've seen a lot of 68 69 with die chips on mm as @paddyman98 stated.

I don't see any underlying D at all, and maybe a wear spot in the center of the S...Spark

Still, the coin has a lot of its original luster, showing very little wear, would be classified a RB (red brown) and would be a keeper imo...not bad for a 50 yo cent...Spark

    You're welcome.

One last bit of info: think of how the S would have ended up on top of the D. At the SF Mint, a working die would have been produced with a Denver mint mark, forcing them to repunch that die with an S. How did that die get to San Francisco in the first place? Did they run out of dies to use and Denver shipped some to them? Or, did a SF Mint worker just happen to have a Denver mint mark punch laying around and he grabbed it by mistake? There are other scenarios how it could have happened.

Your coin doesn't exhibit any doubling or repunching, imo, but thinking about the minting process helps you analyze what you see on what you find. I am by no means, way, shape or form a die expert, but the section @ doubleddie.com on "How dies are made" was very illuminating. Hope this helped.

It's my understanding that all the dies we're punched with their MM in Philly and then shipped out to their respective mints? Could be wrong here but that's my understanding!

Did not know that. I thought each mint produced their own dies for production, although I fully admit not being cognizant of the complete die creation process and how they are used by each mint.

But if true, then it follows that a mint worker in Philadelphia would have made the mistake, for whatever reason, and the faulty die, being a working die probably, was shipped to San Francisco.

Again, all conjecture. But interesting to find out one way or another...I'll see what I can find out, or maybe another forum member already knows the answer. Research commencing now...Spark

@Spark1951 I'm pretty sure I've read this in forum but please let me know if I'm right or wrong here! This also would have been a working hub sent out to the respective mint to make the working die!
