Does anyone else think the US Mint may not produce a 2004 Sacagawea Dollar? I am not sure if the mint wants to eliminate the very popular 10- coin clad and silver proof sets. I don’t think they will go back to a 9-coin set. At this late date in production, they could issue another Treasury Medallion as they did with the SBA Dollars. Would they have already decided to eliminate the Sacagawea at this early date? If anyone has any info on this please let me know.

    Thank you, Jim

Yup - it has already been decided. The 2004 Sacky will be produced. The Mint has already announced that the Mint & Proof sets this year will be 11 piece sets - 11 because of the two nickel designs.

US Mint may not produce a 2004 Sacagawea Dollar? It will not be introduced into circulation again. This is yet another failed attempt for our Dollar coin. Maybe next time... Anybody's crystal ball see Ronald Reagan on the next Dollar coin?

Thank you for the information. The first time I heard that the Sacagawea would not be minted in 2004 was is on shopathomeTV.com. Where are these people getting their info to announce this to a nationwide audience? Do they really have inside connections in the US Mint, or are they just blabbering to sell us something? Shopathometv has now labeled itself as a 'Master Distributor' of US Minted Coins.

You are certainly welcome. Information is the key to this hobby. The Shop at Home Tv along with the other shopping channels are very large Mint buyers along with quite a few dealers. Those who are a part of the 5% discount with the mint are permitted to purchase the uncirculated Silver Eagles. As far as an inside track, NO. All information concerning mintages and design changes are a matter of public record. Coin World releases these statistics on a regular basis. No one expected the Sac Dollar to be minted in 2004. No Dollar coin has a chance of regular circulation as long as we continue to produce a Dollar Bill. Be careful with these shopping networks. Most use a formula of 400% above retail for prices. (Although they are fantastic buyers of quantity).

    2004, 11 coin sets?

I'm wondering if these silver proof sets will be the next "1999 silver proofs" in desirability? since they will have the 2004 new nickles included through 2006 -which means 3 years of a unique collection if you are collection the silver proof sets.

    Any thoughts on this?

Well you're right - to the best of my knowledge there has never been an 11 piece US Proof set - so they will be unique. However - because they are - I would think everybody and his brother will be buying them so I would expect the mintage of these sets to be rather large.

The reason the '99 Silver Proofs are so expensive is not because few were minted. It is because many dealers got caught with their pants down and did not buy enough sets to supply all their customers as time passed. The majority of the '99 sets were bought by collectors - and few were willing to sell them. And since supply and demand rules the market - the dealers did not have availability and prices went up.

So - no - I do not think the 2004 sets will appreciate in price like the '99 sets did.

Well our moderator is correct on some points again. The 2004 will not equal the 99 sets. Yes it will set a new example of both Jefferson five cent coins, but it won't cause a stir. The 99 sets were special because of the state quarter introduction. It wasn't that we as dealers got caught with low inventories. The incredible influx of new collectors got us. No one predicted that millions would flood the market. Past introductions of new designs were not good indicators of this new market. Now in 2004 and beyond we have a better understanding of how many are still collecting. While the levels have dropped off some, the big states are being released this year. (Florida, Michigan.) This will increase demand. But the mint is wise in production schedules.

National Dealer - this is not quite correct. There are presently 11 and only 11 dealers who are authorized to purchase business strike American Silver Eagles directly from the Mint. I can provide you the list of eligible buyers if you wish.

While these 11 dealers are quite probably - almost definitely I would say - participating in the Mint's discount program for high volume buyers. Being a high volume buyer and eligle for the discount does not qualify one to be included among the select list of those who can buy ASE's directly from the Mint. The two things have nothing to do with each other.

You are right sir. I did not word my post very well. I was intending to let others know that there are other avenues other than the shop at home tv show to purchase their Eagles. I commend you on your knowledge.

I don't not know anyone who works for Cameo Coin, but I have found their prices on silver eagles much cheaper than than the same MS or PF grades on TV shopping networks.

    Hi Jim,
I believe you can find better prices almost anywhere, other than TV shopping programs.
You see, TV air time is expensive. This amounts to large amounts of overhead.
True, they do receive a discount on their purchases, by being large volume buyers, but the remainder of that high profile marketing overhead, must be passed on to their customers.
My suggestion would be to find a reputable dealer, and establish a good relationship with them. Whether it's "Cameo Coin", or someone else, the main thing is to find someone that you can trust.
I have a small handfull of dealers, whom I have dealt with over the years, and I know what to expect from them. They send me nice material, and if I'm ever unhappy with anything, they will work with me to make things right.
    Good luck to you,
    ~Jody~

This is quite correct. A good relationship with a dealer is a must in this hobby. A reputable dealer will stand behind his sales. Mistakes happen from time to time, but a dealer that you have a relationship with will make it right. Watch out for TV shopping channels.

The one TV show I get a kick out of is The Coin Vault with a guy named Robert. Their prices are laughable, but Robert is even more so. Does anyone know of him personally, I think he's out of Florida? He's quite a salesman.

I have met this gentleman. He is a serious buyer in the numismatic community. I have also had the opportunity to watch him on the CoinVault. He is very confusing to average collectors. Unfortunately, I receive calls and emails from collectors that have purchased from these types of shows. I do not blame the show for how they market coins. It is the dealers and collectors that are not sharing the correct information. Now I know that some will not agree to this. I do not mean to offend anyone. For each collector that learns that they have paid 400% above retail for an item, most leave the hobby for good. This does not speak well for the hobby. If we as dealers and collectors wish our hobby to succeed and flourish. We all must do our part. It only takes a few people to share what they know with another to make a small difference.

    Douglas,
I believe i have heard Mr. Chambers say he was from Georgia.
Anyway, If you have any questions about this hobby, have those questions answered before you buy anything.
This seems like a great forum, with many who are willing to help.
As for myself, I have been collecting coins for about fourty years, and have a little experience at it. Even so, not many days go by that I fail to learn something new.
If I can help you, in any way, don't hesitate to ask.

I agree 100%. With this hobby and the many wonderful people involved, there are new things to learn on a regular basis. This is the exact reason that I have joined this particular forum. To share my knowledge and learn from others.

I have absolutely no doubt that Robert isn't a very knowledgeable coin man. I guess what irks me is the pitch, like a good carnival man. Sorry Bob, but that's the way I see it.

    Robert Chambers

Please watch out for Mr. Chambers. I am finding coins for sale at dealers for $10.00-$20.00 less than he offers on his television show.
I really get a kick out of his "No mint sets were issued in 1982 and 1983." I think this statement is deliberately misleading folks. He also fails to mention the difference in mint marks on the 1979 and 1982 proof sets with regard to type 1 and 2 sets. I am sure there are others on this forum who can advise you more info on the TV coin shows. Please be sure you check several places for Statehood Quarter prices as these also vary greatly.

    Just my two-cents, Jim

Yeah, he's quite the P.T. Barnham that's for sure. He does leave a lot to the imagination and I'm sure his only sales are to the uninitiated. A dealer told me that people come into his shop all the time with TV coins all bright and happy and then leave very unhappy when they find out how bad they got screwed. I watch Robert just for laughs, and his little sidekick, he's a hoot too. Everybody has to make a living, so live and let live.
