So just won this coin last night, and not being able to make out the obverse bust and legend, I'm thinking of it as a bit of a gamble purchase (as much as you can have numismaticly for $10 USD). I am pretty easily able to make out that it's Pax on the reverse with legend PAX - AVG and Pax standing left holding a branch and sceptre (too straight to be a cornucopiae, right?). And with the SC in field it's probably before 275-300AD? And since it seems to be Latin legends, I'd believe imperial. But I'm stumped on the obverse legend and who it is, as my searches have turned up no leads... Here's what I'm roughly seeing for the legend: IMP (???) CVIPVCIVS (?????) AVG It's 20mm, looks strongly like AE, 7.5g Any ideas? What am I missing? Edit: obverse legend - IMP CAE C VIB VOLVSIANO AVG
My Imperial knowledge is lacking so I can't help on the denomination, but I think the obverse is Volusian. After what seems to be VIP, I see VOL... (edited: too slow )
Exactly the lead I need! Thank you to you both, @maridvnvm & @TIF!! I'm wondering if the seller's size is accurate...? Well we'll see when it gets delivered. Now off to do more digging on this one! And a emperor I didn't know much/anything about (probably why the legend didn't jump out at me). Thanks again!
So, it looks bronze based on the patina, and antoniniani didn't really have the SC in the fields... It's leading me to believe it is a small flan AE As like this one? Only even smaller? https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=50743 (And I will have to confirm actual size in hand.) He looks laureate to me too. Edit: probably RIC IV Volusian 256
Could be even for another coin and was accidentally put in for this one... Time will tell. Thanks for your help!
https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=1724641 The fabric looks like an as so I suspect the weight is correct. Sestertii of the period tend to be less round.
Similarly found one on MA-Shops that is around/under this OP's advertised weight (of 7.5g): 7.28g https://www.ma-shops.com/ritter/item.php?id=30282&lang=en And another example at 8.57g: https://www.ma-shops.com/wallinmynt/item.php?id=13239&lang=en
Nice pick up - As of Volusian. Not a particularly common coin @Justin Lee so you should be happy with it.
