Tipping the Bank Teller

I've got a teller that's been enthusiastically putting older bills and unusual customer deposits of coins aside for me each week, and I want to show my appreciation.

Who here tips their bank teller (or is/has been a bank teller) and can share their experience with tipping? I'm assuming passing a teller some cash as a tip would be inappropriate, but perhaps a gift card? What do you think?

I've never heard of cash being used, so I think that is frowned upon. I've heard of baked goods, gift cards, donuts, etc.

Well, I have taken a teller out for a quick lunch because we have gotten to her by helping my dad for the past 30 years. They are not supposed to accept any money. I think Gift card is ok but you can't show this to anyone.

I think that there just a lot of nice people out there. Just Genuine good people.

I've heard of a lot of people who take donuts onto their bank occasionally. Giving them cash just doesn't seem right though IMO. Different banks may have different rules about that.
Sounds like you have a great teller there. Don't lose 'em! :)

Banks have rules about cash. Flowers, baked goods or a gift card are appreciated.

I never tipped with "cash" but tipped quite frequently with chocolates and other snacks. My kid even made them thank you cards. Didn't matter. They eventually cut me off. :p Their branch is closing down in a couple weeks. I like to think it is karma :)

Donuts or pastries are a good choice, especially if it's not a big branch. Other tellers can enjoy them and it removes any look of impropriety. And you may be able to convert some of the other tellers to your side

You have to yell 'Convert! Convert!' at them while doing that.

physics-fan3.14 You got any more of them.... prooflikes?

    Everybody likes Donuts!

Get them a box of Hot and Fresh Krispy Kreme... melt in your mouth delicious hot donuts and you'll have the tellers melting like putty in your hands!

Just make sure they wash their hands before they touch your coins ;)

I have only one bank I’m allowed to bring US coins to and every time I come, I bring a plate full of homemade cupcakes with homemade frosting. I don’t think they can legally turn me away because of their contract, but I do my best to be super polite and even make mental notes of things they tell me, so I can bring them back up in conversation later, to show them I care/listen.

A big yes to candy, donuts, home baked good even but not cash. The nice thing about the three I mentioned is they can be shared, no one feels left out and if your normal teller is out, everyone is your friend.

Great point on the sharing. Everyone is happy to see me come in to make a deposit (moreso when they’re not the ones having to weigh and count each roll).

Great comments all. I must say though that I don't dump at this bank. I just spend what I get. It seems to make people's day to get a $2 or an Ike or whatnot as a tip.

I think there are probably some potential issues with passing money to tellers for them to keep. If I were a teller, I'd probably not want to be pocketing any money from my side of the register for fear of being fired. I've actually met several tellers who have never seen an Ike dollar. Kinda crazy!

Agreed it would be nice to be able to show some sort of thanks for looking out for you.
But by doing so you may end up getting the teller fired, im sure banks wouldn't want employees accepting gifts.
Most companies have policy in place forbiding accepting gifts.
There was a meat company in my area that would charter fishing trips years ago.
That came to a complete halt...as many companies looked at it as a monetary means to get business favors.
I have had employees turn down even small tokens such as pens and other gimmies due to their company rules towards taking such gifts.

Nyatii I like running w/scissors. Makes me feel dangerous

My teller has a parrot she dotes on. I found a really nice book on the kind she has and she was thrilled. I also made her a billionaire. Gave her $1 billion and $1 million Zimbabwe bank notes. She thought they were fun. Maybe find out your tellers’ hobbies.
