This almost gets my attention: https://www.ebay.com/itm/1925-P-Pea...sh=item1eea51b73b:g:2ccAAOSwqF5bmsSQ&LH_BIN=1 I'm new to grading so any input you may have would be appreciated. I feel this coin could qualify as a MS66; however, that nick above the eye just kills it for me. I feel as if there wasn't the nick above the eye it would grade a solid MS66 and that would be a good price. Thoughts?
Yes, the nick over the eye is in a prominent place. If the rest of the coin was superb, it could still reasonably get a 66. It appears that the luster is strong, but the eye appeal seems kinda spotty (especially that large spot on the reverse, which I'm guessing wasn't there when it was graded). I like that coin much better at 65+
I personally would not give that coin an MS-66. In fact I'd have trouble getting higher than MS-64. I wonder if the small slab was from the days when ANACS was looser with its grading.
It's not the hit over the eye that bothers me as a 66; it's what appears to be a PVC corrosion spot on the reverse.
I almost mentioned the spot on the back, which in my opinion is the strike #3 with the damage above the eye being #1 & #2. But yeah, I'm with you on this one.
I really don't have a problem with that coin being in a 66 slab. The luster and strike are very commendable, especially for that specific year. The spot on the reverse really kills it for me though. It drops the eye appeal down one notch. If you want to see a coin that is over graded IMO. Here is one. https://coins.ha.com/itm/peace-doll...6-4874.s?ic4=ListView-ShortDescription-071515
I almost mentioned the spot on the back, which in my opinion is the strike #3 with the damage above the eye being #1 & #2. But yeah, I'm with you on this one. You're harsh. Why the 64? It looks solid to me except for the eye slash and the corrosion on the back. I think this is a solid 65 (Again, I'm learning here).
Two reasons: -- I see a some small nicks scattered around; too many for a 66. And even if they are bag marks there's too many. -- I found out at the ANA Summer Seminars that I'm a technical grader, not a market grader. (I believe that's because my grading techniques were learned 60+ years ago.)
You're too old for your opinion to count anymore! I've a tendency to agree - I don't like the marks on the neck either. Had I thought this was a solid MS66 I would have bought it immediately. Thanks for your thoughts.
It is a later generation Anacs (notice the 7 digits in the cert number...the earlier slabs had 6 digits or 2 letters and 4 digits).
Personally, I would probably give that an MS-64+, maybe an MS-65. But, in my opinion, MS-66 is too high.
I've no idea what it is worth. I gave $48 delivered. It was just exceptionally odd and I'd never seen one before. I went and looked up the history - wow, some angry threads from around 2000.
