my guess is someone thought it was a DDO/DDR or something valuable and submitted it as an error. Otherwise, why would they even submit it as an error? What are your thoughts @furryfrog02 @Rick Stachowski @JCro57 @paddyman98 @Paddy54
Fair, but it is such a minor error, with a rather ugly looking cent, I just don’t understand it. If you have money to burn on this, wouldn’t you have money for something nicer?
If they thought it was a DDO then they would send it to be attributed as a variety and not a Mint Error. NGC would not had attributed it as a Mint Error if that were the case.
Thanks, this demonstrates my ignorance on submissions. The coin is barely misaligned so I’m trying to understand who sees this as submission-worthy (maybe a newcomer to collecting?)
You'd be surprised at the damaged coins, and the genuine, but very minor mechanical errors that people submit to all the authentication services.
Oh to be a fly on the wall. You’re likely 100% correct. I’ve only submitted one coin to date and don’t see the value in submitting such coins, but each submitter has their own thresholds and reasons. I did enjoy buying it for less than the costs to submit. Though I guess you could also say I overspent on an ugly cent. To each their own!
I can't see anything besides a slightly MAD obverse as is stated on the slab. I think I agree with @Fred Weinberg and @Rick Stachowski ....People with money to burn and not enough knowledge.
Make sure you check that coin for a variety . Here it is on ngc site . https://www.ngccoin.com/certlookup/4824648-003/55/
We had a thread here where it was posted some eBay auction of just normal pocket change that was slabbed. Someone lost a ton of money. They probably thought all the PMD was mint errors, and didn't want to listen to anyone with more knowledge than them. Because, if it looks different, it must be a mint error !! Don't you watch all those YouTube videos? You'll be rich if you send your damaged pocket change in for grading !!
If someone submitted this as MAD, but it was also a variety, wouldn’t that also get attributed, or would they have to specifically ask for that?
Probably, you been here long enough to have seen plenty of threads of newbies that have found very minor errors or non errors or even regular low value coins that think they "Have to get it slabbed". And of course people who told their "amazing find" is common or damage that then argue about its they get told "OK so send it in". Some of them do.
