FORVM evacuation and best wishes to our members in the path of the storm

I just found out that Forum has been evacuated due to the approaching hurricane. I was trying to call them to inquire about a coin but it looks like they are on the path of the storm. My best wishes to them and any of our members who are in the areas that will be affected. As someone in Florida, who has survived three hurricanes and a tornado, I can definitely relate to you guys and I wish you nothing but the best. Please stay safe.

As this is the ancients forum, it's only right to appeal to the gods and goddesses of antiquity to keep you all safe. I hereby entreat Jupiter Optimus to watch over you guys, and to Salus to ensure your well-being through this whole nightmare.

I think the shift overnight means FORVM’s headquarters are going to take a direct hit. I’ll be feeling the hurricane over the weekend, but thankfully am not near the coast

Oh wow. FAC is located in Moorehead, NC-- definitely going to be walloped and inundated.

I hope all at-risk CT members are evacuating and that you will be able to return to intact homes as soon as possible.

This storm is looking extremely dangerous .

 

Well, I hope it doesn't get inundated, or that at least they evacuated the coins. I still have this one on layaway, and I've already paid 80% of it off. It would be a shame if it suffered water damage.

I know it has a boat, but it can't float. I was about to pay the other 20% today, but now I think I'll definitely wait until after the storm to make sure I still have a coin to make that last payment towards.

 

May you all in the storms path find a safe place to be. My family will be saying prayers for those in the line of the storm , and for those that need help to get some place safe. May the spirit of goodness watch over all of you and keep you safe . We hope for nothing but the best for you , and that the storm will weaken and head back out to sea or diminish completely. Four of five local school districts canceled school for Friday and announced it yesterday. The only one that held out was where my grandson attends. Yesterday they changed the prediction for us in Virginia from terrible to some rain and moved the whole thing south of here so he has to go to school as of last word. All of the Carolinas are now expected to be hit hard with the coast devastated. Morehead City is as coastal as it gets. As I understand it now, the worst may be south of Morehead but the entire region could use any prayers any of you are willing to apply.

 

Atlanta is in the path, but I expect everything to be okay

 

I hope everyone has taken the precautions necessary.. and we get a break and things aren't as bad as they seem to be at the moment. Stay Safe!!

Perhaps Romans may choose to ask his brother Neptune and hope he may have a say??

I've been toying with the idea of buying a solid bronze replica statue of Jupiter and building a Roman-style home shrine with sacrifice bowl in front for incense burning, and maybe put a few denarii on the altar as an offering. I found a company in Germany that makes replica statues of shrine deities from the ancient world. Here is one contender.



Obviously I don't believe old Jupiter will actually do anything for me as he's not real, but it would be a cool historical display for fun and decoration, kind of like a conversation piece to get visitors engaged in a little bit of history.

Plus I would hardly be the first one here to do something of the sort. I've seen some interesting "shrines" by some of you here, such as @TIF '' cool little shrine to the Goddess of Sewers.

 

If I were going to install such an item, I would insist on a statue in the pose common on coins. That Zeus does not have the regal look needed.

Perhaps the answer is to buy a 3D printer and make one to your specifications??? I believe theirs is life size but printers scale well.

Imagine what TIF could do with one of these. We could have a shrine/throne that actually flushes.

 

I respectfully disagree. That is a replica of a bronze Roman statue of Jupiter that would have been found on a home altar. Jupiter standing up and holding a staff is a very common Roman motiff on coins. Please compare the statue to these coins.

As you can see, the Jupiter on the reverse of this denarius of Vespasian is a match for this replica of a Roman statue found in the remains of a Roman home. This leads me to believe that both were inspired by a real statue that may have existed in a Roman Temple in the capital.




Please also see these other similar representations of Jupiter found on the reverses of two of my Gordian III coins. Unlike Iovis Cvstos, these other representations of Jupiter have a thunderbolt, but are otherwise similar.
