A bunch of these boxes arrived today! They will effectively protect my coins from bending and breaking, as well as looking like an appealing and professional setup. The two coins I most wanted to protect happened to not fit in these boxes, so I will find something for them...
Looks great! How deep are those containers, are they made for this purpose, if not then what were they designed for, what is the insert made of, and where did you get them? (Inquiring minds... )
This looks like a really nice display! My only concern is that these are coin-safe materials, as TIF is implying. But it looks sharp.
Not very thick (don’t expect to put tets in these). They were sold to me with the purpose of spade/knife storage. The insert looks like squishy fleece. I am not sure if it is chemically inert with coins. There is a lot of give. The cushion adapts well. This coin is curved and very fragile. It accomodated it quite nicely. I guess we’ll see...

That is a fantastic solution for those difficult to store coins. Really looks like it supports those fragile pieces so well.. Great idea!! My coins aren't as high end as most here.. for storage I head to the Goodwill and pick up old jewelry boxes (have 3 so far). This "new" one was $4 .. I will sand it down, paint and finish it soon - they look great when done.. but haven't worked on this one yet.
I did the same thing when I started with ancients! Mine held about 50 coins... I blew past that number pretty quick and the poor box was banished to the closet. I also bought an old slide (like 1950s/1960s image slides) storage box.... I never got around to using it but still have it somewhere.
Good to hear I am not totally crazy..lol. Well I love the look of those amazing Abafil trays and cases but I just can't justify the price. These have worked pretty well for me so far.
I've been thinking of using this storage method. Would only cost me $2,700 in slabbbing fees to do my whole collection, or I could have a killer vacation with that money, or buy another 150+ really nice ancient coins with that money. Nah, I think the NGC plastic is the right choice there.
I can say that my modern coins are almost all slabbed. I have a 1770-1807 British 1/2D set, few Older Gold US coins and A huge Qing Dynasty and republic Chinese set. With the amount of fakes with Chinese coins I decided to slab them for future sale after im gone and my family don't need to worry about this. I do like slabs for certain reasons but I don't think I will slab any of my ancients without a very direct purpose. I tend to think ancients are a different coin animal and without truly being able to authentic them it become a "why do it" to me. with that said if I get a truly rare, fragile etc specimen I might vary from the norm.

I think the choice is yours though and if your happy with it do it.
They have survived many hundreds of years (a couple of thousand ++ in many cases) without this protection.. yet here they are! So generally (in my mind as a beginner) you should not bother with ancients. But at the end of the day you own them! .. do what you want and don't feel pressure either way. No ones business but your own.
For some time I have used trays of small plastic tubs with foam inserts to hold my very small and very oddly shaped coins (like the teeth from Akragas). The tubs are contained in a holed foam insert in a glass covered box. This has been posted before. I discover that the two sizes I already had also fit cash of the small (25mm) and large sizes (30mm). I place a minimal ID label on the bottom. These accept a stack of coins making it easy to tell which ones I have in duplicate (trade stock).
Update on my $4 Goodwill buy.... a bit a spray paint cleaned it right up.. Still have some cleaning up to do... but it's coming together. Keeping the coins I am currently working on (or just want to handle) here and the rest in one of my other boxes.
