Don't know if this is an error or environmental damage. 20180906_180732.jpg

Could be a "Woodie" a cent in which the components of the alloy didn't mix properly and it results in a wood grain. I like it.

Seems to have a stronger wood grain effect than usual

Are the lines indented into the coin?

It is an improperly mixed alloy or "woodie." I have found these before. Is the reverse like this too?

Roller lines appear from damage before the coin is struck.

If the coin has a textured feel or appearance it is due to a weak strike not smoothing the roller lines.
If the coin is smooth they have either worn down over time or it is an alloy mixing issue.

It is very uniform for a "woodie" so I'm inclined to lean in favor of your assessment.

Though I do seem to be wrong a considerable amount lately. Must be old age setting in on me.

An intriguing coin either way that I would personally keep.

That is a cool find if it is a legit improper alloy. Very nice! I would also like to see the reverse.

Here is an improper alloy cent from my collection; it is actually "brass" and not "bronze". Also a woodie. AU58 by NGC

It looked like a woodie to me.
But wouldn't the grain be on both sides?
She said the reverse didn't have it.
