If he is for real I wonder what 50 new coins suddenly entering the market would do to the price of 16-D Mercs, especially if they are MS. Price is determined by supply and demand. The price should drop if demand remains constant and supply increases.

Some may remember what happened to prices of the 1903-O Morgan dollar. In the early 1960s an uncirculated 1903-O Morgan dollar was worth $1,500 (a LOT of money back then) because uncirculated examples were rare. The Mint released thousands of '03-O Morgans from their vaults and within weeks the price dropped to below $50. I, for one, wouldn't want to be stuck with a coin worth 3% of what I paid for it because somebody released a hoard into the market.

If I had a roll of MS '16-D Mercs I would travel around the country and sell one coin at a time to dealers and at coin shows. That way by the time anyone figured out there were suddenly 50 new uncirculated key dates in the market I would have already sold mine at the previous high prices based on a smaller supply of the coins. (The TPGs would probably be the first ones to catch on that a hoard had entered the market when they start receiving a lot of the coins to grade.)

good point maybe get 5 of them grded at one time and then sell them then get another 5 graded. generally speakig though it is said for quality coins the prices generally do not drop anfd i dont htink addition of a 50 will be thta bad now if 5000 ms came in tot he market then who knows

My PCGS Population Report is a bit out of date (April '07) but the numbers should be useful. For 1916-D Dimes it reports a pop of:

    MS/MSFB

    60 - 1/3
    61 - 1/9
    62 - 13/37
    63 - 15/69
    64 - 7/114
    65 - 4/31
    66 - 1/18
    67 - 0/6

I didn't realize that FB 16-Ds outnumbered non-FSBs by such a wide margin (289 vs 42 0). The total pop of PCGS Mint State '16-D Dimes is 331. If you reduce that number by 10% to account for resubmittals that leaves a total pop of only 300. I don't know what the pop of NGC MS '16-D Dimes is but let's assume it is the same. That would give us a total of 600 coins.

Do you think an influx of 50 more coins would affect the market price of these coins? 50 more coins would represent over 8% of the existing pop. I think it would shake things up quite a bit.

PCGS has a total of 471 and NGC 191 with full bands. PCGS 3190 and ngc 1481 without. Courtesy of Heritage and they are current numbers.

50 out of 5300 is not goin gto make that much of adifference and remember they might not all grade

Can't see how 50 of them showing up will make a huge impact when 264,000 were minted. Even assuming every one of them is MS, adding 50 to the current population of slabbed MS would still make the total population low, and scarce. There will still be far more people who want these (amongst those that can afford them) than can possibly be supplied.

Is that all grades or only MS? (My numbers were only for MS.)

The important factor is not how many were minted but how many survive.

Well how many survive is some fraction of how many were minted. It was known pretty quickly after these were minted how rare they were so I imagine it probably has a decent survival rate, though coin collecting wasn't as prevalant at the time, so there's no way to be sure.

My main point though is that even with 50 more on the market they'll still be very scarce and demand will still definitely exceed supply, so the overall value of 1916-D dimes probably won't go down significantly, if at all. Maybe if someone finds say, a thousand of them... but 50 is just a drop in the bucket, even for this rare of a coin.

What is the differance, if I'm not mistaking there is only one 1916 D dime and that is the Murcury. The barber dime only come out with 1916 and 1916S.

I agree, Why are ya'll raking him over the coals? If the man says he got a roll of 1916d Murcury's then he got the roll, what does it matter to any of ya'll.

Why bring it up here if not to share information about it?
It's natural for people to want to know the grade and see photos.

If you just walk in to a half-a-million dollars + what would you be doing right now?

    I would

    1. Get the coins graded.

    2. Talking to Todd Imhof at Heritage setting up a Auction.

    3. Setting up a retirement fund.

Things I would not be doing.

    1. Bring the coins home unguarded.

    2. Handling them to take pictures.

    3. Answering people question that just raked me over the coals.

I don't see why anyone would expect him to discuss his feelings about his grandmother here. That's what his family is for. You folks are for talking about coins, and nothing more unless he feels like it.
