First of all, thank you for allowing me in this forum. I spend a lot of time reading the old posts and find ancients amazing. I am a newby to ancients and am becoming overwhelmed on some (a lot) of this. For instance: How do I tell the difference between a Denarius, Antonianius, Follis, and all the others? I see these mentioned on the forums and have no idea what they are. Not looking for a coin type, era, or anything else yet, just trying to learn all that I can! This is the best source I have come up with so far: https://www.littletoncoin.com/webap...|LearnNav|Guide-to-Ancient-Roman-Coinage.html

Welcome! I think you'll find Warren Esty's page listing educational websites to be a real treasure and just what you're looking for.

I used to collect old US coins. Then life happens, I suffered a stroke, lost all interest in my coins and sold them. Around two years later, I went to a coin show, saw the ancients and was hooked! Now I spend my time researching and learning what I can about them. Fascinating!! Right now I only have a few coins, but I like the coins of Septimius Severus

Welcome to the forum, @Texturn . You are welcome around here any time so long as you pay the protection money in the form of sestertii or denarii, capisce? ;)

Here's an Early Imperial Roman Denominations infographic (23 BC-215 AD):

You might find my page on denominations helpful. Each photo has one coin lying on a US cent for scale (assuming you are familiar with the size of a US cent). Welcome.
You might also get some fun from my pages on Septimius. I wrote it in 1997 and, like the rest of my site, did little to update it since I always found new topics more compelling than fixing up the old ones.

There are two of us here whose primary specialty is Septimius. If you have a Septimius question, this would be a good place to ask it.

@Texturn, your questioning about denominations and terms got me thinking and researching (using sources from @dougsmit and @Valentinian among others) this afternoon, and decided to try my hand at putting together a timeline (with most of the denominations) showing when they appeared and disappeared (click it to expand). The 4th century and beyond is a little difficult for me, so if anyone has any modifications to it, please let me know.

And make sure you check out the resources above for more details (size, weight, value, debasement, weight reduction, etc) about each of the types of coins.
