I don't have any definite proof but here is what I was told-

I was speaking to the owner of an antique mall who said one of his customers found an 1894 S dime in a bulk lot of coins at a flea market last week. Right in my area!
The person apparently sent it in for grading, if this is legitimate, then we have another 1894 S Dime

Well, if it's legit, we'll certainly be hearing about it. Apparently the last one to be discovered was found in a junk-coin box, back in 1957...

Not all of the 23 1894-S dimes that were struck are accounted for. On the other hand, neither are all of the many thousand counterfeits and added-mintmark fakes of the date. We'll see.

That would be really cool. I'm thinking there is only 1 known right now?

I would say it’s most likely fake/altered. Hard to believe that one could be kicking around this long before being “found”.

physics-fan3.14 You got any more of them.... prooflikes?

There has been a lot of numismyth and numislegend posted in this thread. Please read the excellent auction description of the last one sold on Heritage (for almost $2 million), here: https://coins.ha.com/itm/proof-barb...66-pcgs-secure-cac/a/1231-5317.s?type=NGC1231

The mintage was supposedly 24, and there are currently 9 known specimens (with a few other unconfirmed sightings). A complete census is listed in that auction page.

Last time I went to a flea market, I discovered a new specimen of the 1804 Dollar. So, it happens ;)

    BTW.... it was fake.

The book is probably wrong. PCGS shows 4, NGC shows 5, and the pedigree record indicates that at least a couple were crossed back and forth. There are currently 9 known.

You can read the PCGS coinfacts page here, although the Heritage link above provides a lot more detail: http://www.pcgscoinfacts.com/Coin/Detail/4805

As the Finn said, the mintage was 24.
If all 24 are known/ documented, etc.
These are all proofs. That should make it easier to tell if it's fake.
Then this is probably an altered (added S) coin.
But you never know. Stranger things have happened and been discovered.
Will be watching for when the thread is updated with news.
