Ty for the links and that's good to know. I didn't ask that I heard he was overpriced. I asked if he was selling fakes( from what someone told me. I didn't think he was but I wanted to ask you all to see If anyone else had any dealings with him. I am glad that hes not selling fakes( because they sure looked genuine to me when I got them) I agree that hes a bit overpriced- I didn't think it was THAT much. I did get a few reasonably priced coins( my opinion- not the ones I posted). I do know that he had and still has coins that he is selling for hundreds of dollars that are nowhere worth that much. I wouldn't put what you are all saying past him. Many coins are a bit too high. many seem like they aren't. still... its called capitalism. he can sell whatever he wants for whatever price he wants. We can either buy it from him or not,. I usually deal with different sellers than him(who are cheaper usually). I understand that newbies could get turned off by buying overpriced coins, but if they do research they could find them cheaper- maybe. Apple sells computers and phones for many times they are worth and people don't stop buying their overpriced crap when they can get an android phone or windows computer that is just as fast or advanced for much much cheaper prices. But hey, on ebay, during a bidding war, people can bid however high they want! LOL I recently won an ancient ring on ebay action for only 60 bucks that was sold on an offline auction 10 years ago for 300- worth about 4 or 500 . Sometimes you get lucky, sometimes you don't.
I am one of those who has purchased some coins I like from High Ratings and failed to negotiate deals on others. Every so often I try again if I see something I want but you never know whether it is something he will sell or just a game piece for his business plan. Similarly, there are several dealers who place prices on their personal collections that should guarantee they don't sell but pretending to be a dealer is more important to them than actually being one. It takes all kinds. I often wonder why some of us abusive regulars bother coming here but the fact remains that most of us find Coin Talk to be the best of the few options out there and we have friends here that we will not likely ever see in person considering where we live. Contrary to your statement, we do welcome new friends but we have had several run ins with trolls who joined Coin Talk (some with multiple ID's) for the expressed purpose of making trouble. If you are interested in the coins and have things to discuss about your coins or about those posted by others, welcome. How many threads have you read/participated in other than this one? Will you be a regular and friend or are you the latest iteration of the last troll? Sorry the poster with 500 posts offended you. I note you ignored the question about who called the coins fake that was posted by one of our real (9000 extra meaty posts) regulars who was trying to help. Of this entire thread, the most valuable post IMHO was #20 by our '40 distinquished posts regular Andrew' who is known to most of us from other places. He told how to buy from High Ratings using the exact techniques that I have on the few coins I have from him. My only difference is I agree with 2000 post extremely helpful regular Valentinian's number of ten times reasonable rather than Andrew's four. Andrew also mentioned the 'Ignore' feature on CT which does come in quite handy. Enjoy using it if you decide to play with our primadonnas. Since I'm not clear on why I am here, I can hardly question why you are when you have already written us off as losers. Will you ignore me or I you? Will we come out of this poor start and benefit from the experience? To follow the 'rule' to keep things coin related, This is my most recent $46 new add from Frank Robinson. It is an Augustus of Amphipolis showing Artemis riding a bull. The glossy patina makes it hard to photograph. What would High Ratings ask?
@Beginner345 : It appears your first foray onto CoinTalk ancients was a little bit rough, but you have to understand that without a doubt everyone here has your best interest at heart. That ebay seller has been a sore point for a lot of us over the years. Many of us, including myself, believe that he tries to take advantage of folks who are just entering the ancients world. I've said it before, eBay is definitely not the place for beginner collectors ... too many fakes and too many overpriced coins. That being said, take a look at other ancient coin sites mentioned, or even check out sites like Vcoins. You may find better pieces at equal or lower prices. And welcome to our little community.
Stick around and hang with us a while, Ty. I enjoy reading your comments. Some of our members can be blunt but it's nothing personal. Many of the guys on this site are very experienced and don't like to see newcomers being taken advantage of by unscrupulous dealers. When I was a kid, I remember my grumpy old grandfather growling at me "What's the matter with ya'? Don't ya' have any common sense? and giving me a bear hug at the same time. Really—there are some great folks here......some are just a little eccentric
To the OP. I joined about a year and a half ago. This forum is the one that got me interested in Ancients, and I am sincerely glad that happened. I find that the people that inhabit this area of CoinTalk are some of the finest around and I value everyone's opinion. I believe if I hang around long enough, I may learn something. My view is that they have way more knowledge than I have, so that is why I mostly just listen. I don't have much input that they as a collective don't know. It's enjoyable to be around the people here, mostly a classy lot. Every so often I will throw in a comment at hopes for levity, or maybe input from my personal experiences. Other than that, I leave the Ancients to the experts on this forum, hoping to learn from their years of experience.
