I didn't pay 5 but I paid a lot less than $39

These sellers have to make some profit. I mean you cant expect to get everything you want for pocket change.


Wildwinds stated that this one( which is only a little bit higher grade than mine) goes ( well went ) for $180 US.

 

That is not just a little bit better than yours...

I've made the guy some reasonable offers which he declined. That's fine, no need to give money to guys like that...

this one goes for $400 . and yes this is only a little bit better than mine.( at least the obverse is. You can read 2 letters on this ones reverse that you cant on mine. but is that worth over $390 dollars more ? I doubt it.

I can appreciate the challenges of trying to collect on a budget. When I first started collecting, I grabbed anything and everything I could under $20. As a result, today I have several coins in my collection that I’m not particularly pleased to own but don’t have much resale value. The trend for me, and I think for many experienced collectors, is gradually to slow down and collect fewer coins in better grades. Honestly, the only coin in your list that I would be happy to have in my collection would be the Macedonian shield you mentioned. And I have fairly inclusive standards on what I would keep in my collection. But ultimately, it’s your collection, not mine.

Opinions on this board can be articulated in a very direct fashion, which sometimes can seem abrasive. I’ve been on the receiving end of that from time to time, and I understand that if you are new to this board, you may find that to be quite off-putting. I would encourage you to stick around. In time, I suspect you would grow to like even some of the folks who seem offputting to you now. If you can avoid personalizing the comments, you might consider that ultimately the advice is designed to help you build a collection in a way that makes the best use of your budget. Indeed, for what you are spending or maybe a little more, you can probably find some offerings on VCoins.com and from the sellers that others have mentioned that are in better condition.

But now I am coming off as a bit condescending, and I don’t mean to be. Welcome to the board! I hope you stick around and keep collecting.

 

He was offensive. All I said was I didn't feel comfortable in bidding for that coin in question and he attacked me. So yes, . This board is a maelstrom of personal attacks by the regulars against the new board members. One wonders why this board has any members at all. This board is full of drama queen - primadonnas. They can dish it out but they cant take it.

Sometimes? LOL biggest understatement of the century. I almost feel like the regulars don't want new members because they are so quick to attack anyone with a view that differs from their own. Is that it ? If so then I would be more than happy to leave. This board is like 1 big ball of stress most of the time. Nobody gives anyone room to express their opinions.

 

I've always found the VCoins website (www.vcoins.com) to be a reasonable place to look for most types of coins, and in addition, the (retail) pricing is part of the search results you'll get when looking for particular coins, or types of coins. These coins are guaranteed authentic, so if somehow a coin you purchased from a VCoins dealer is later shown to be counterfeit, you can get your purchase price refunded.

There is no similar guarantee from EBay sellers, and for this reason alone both experience and caution are recommended traits if you really want to gamble on purchases from EBay dealers.

On a different note, everyone here was a beginner in this hobby at some point. There are many areas of ancient coin collecting in which I'm still a beginner, and I personally don't mind being regarded as a beginner in these areas. If someone were to ask or label me as such in a post on this site, I would simply acknowledge the accuracy of that observation and ask for information to further my education in areas where I'm still learning. It's very, very rare for collectors on this site to be purposely or inadvertently rude, so I'd encourage you to move forward with your questions and take advantage of the education that's provided from the wealth of knowledge you'll find here.

 

I think if you look at your coin and the one from CNG side by side you'll see there is a very high degree of difference. It doesn't mean that yours isn't nice but they are in different states of preservation.

It's not meant as an attack. Over time our eye gets sharper and we can distinguish what makes coins different. Gavin summed it up best.

 

Most of us here don't like seeing beginners wasting their hard earned money on, to me, crooks. And this ebay seller is one. And most likely you overpaid big on your very low-grade coins and it can lead you and other beginners to shy away from ancients.

Actually that is what everyone is doing. Coin collectors can be very objective and direct talking when it is about coins and their opinions on it, the grade, value, etc. is often extremely direct.The main areas that are specifically forbidden are vulgar language, religion, politics , and world events. Disagreements do occur and can get somewhat sharp. The forum expects each member to be able to control themselves, and measure the expertise you are obtaining for free with any reasonable amount of satire or argumentation. If it is over the line of reasonable in the eyes of the staff, it will be taken care of by us. This forum has many of the best 'free' judges and advisors on coins of all types on the internet and the owners wish it to be applicable to all ages, so everyone should think before pressing the post key. The ancient forum has multiple members where English is not the primary language. So lets start over. WELCOME! Jim

I'm not an ancients guy per say but love this area of CT and read it often. I have purchased some from Frank Robinson at FSRCOINS and Dr. Ronald Kurlan who lists some in Numismatic News often and found both to be fair, reasonable, and honest dealers who both know how to grade properly. I especially enjoy the pre-1821 Indonesia Tin Pitus coins that Frank specializes in and wrote a book on. But he also sells a lot of ancients.

@Beginner345 , the mere mention of highrating_lowprice begets hostility (not at you, at him). He is one of the most hated sellers on eBay--not because his coins are fake (they are not), but because he so misrepresents their values. Those of us who love ancient coins don't want others to be ripped off when there are so many good sellers. He purposely misleads potential buyers with initial prices that are often ten times what I could buy them for. I just checked his current offerings and the crossed out price is typically ten (yes, ten) times what the coin is worth. When innocent buyers pay 60% off they are still paying far too much, and this irritates the knowledgeable collecting community.

Look, the OP asked for advice. I'm sorry the news was not something to his liking, but that's the way it goes sometimes. I made plenty of mistakes as a newbie too, but instead of getting offended at the people who were trying to teach me, I listen to them and learned from my mistakes.

Heck, even now I still make the occasional mistake when purchasing a coin. Nobody's perfect. The only way we're ever going to learn and get to the point where we don't make so many mistakes is by educating ourselves. Don't get mad at others here we're trying to help you.
