If you had the opportunity to travel back in time and purchase just one coin or one paper bill , what year would you go back to and what would you bring back with you ? As for me it would be the year 1800 to get the first Draped bust half cent. THE OTHER BRUCE.
I don't mean to bust your bubble, but even then many US coins weren't seen by the general population. A lot of trade was done by bartering and the coinage was Spanish. You may end up only coming back with a beaver pelt.
i would go back to about 1900 .. i would want to buy allthe 1986 $5 chiefs and $10 bison notes as possible. i knwo you asked about 1 item .. but i am greedy
I would go to Washington, DC in March 1933 and exchange as much money as I could lay my hands on for 1933 $10 gold pieces before they were withdrawn. Alternatively, I would go to 1877 and grab a few rolls of 1877 IH cents.
Thats a hard answer.....I would have to say 1799, grab me a shiny new large cent and have a drink and a cigar with the founding fathers at some smoky old pub with sawdust floors and hopefully play poker The wife and I are going to Baltimore this year to view the Lincoln Cent exhibit, then on to DC for a historical tour, thats fine for me.
Id take five well worn grungy morgans back in time to 1914, and make a stop at the 'customer service window' at the denver mint. "Excuse me, Sir, May I please have ten rolls of your new pennies?" After I done that, Id go to a Nickelodeon Theater and catch a Fatty Arbuckle film. Or maybe Charlie Chaplin. Id pay with five of those new pennies, it would be WORTH IT!!
That is true, however I said time travel and you did not bust my bubble and there is also no Superman. THE OTHER BRUCE.
I realize you are talking about time travel. Many people don't comprehend how trade was done even up until the late 1800's. Just wanted to point this out. Have fun with your fantasy.
Hey Bruce, interesting thread. I'd go back to 1909, and pick up a 1909 VDB Proof cent. Except, I'd purchase some money from back then in the present, that way they don't get upset when I pay with a 2003 $5 note, lol. Phoenix
I'd also go back to 1909 and pick up a 1909-S IHC I'll just pay with my 1899 V Nickel, so I can get 5 of them, lol.
i go back to the first coin minted in America 1535, when i get back make sure it is steal real and not a counterfeit ;p
Quite a choice, but that one wasn't struck until 1538. And just for future reference, no coins were struck until 1536.
