im about to get a widows mite for $45 on a coin store online... is that really high because the same coins on ebay are listed at $15 with a buy now.... only thing i can think of is that they are charging $25 for the case and the certificate..... anyone know why
It depends but on the whole widows mites are VERY cheap...there are online stores selling piles of them. I had a seller send me one gratis because he was late shipping... There are MANY that are just plain in poor shape ond even the ones in good shape are almost always still poorly minted....some are more rare than others and some selelrs just sell them for much more. Here is a listing of mites, you can buy them for anywhere between 6 to 50 dollars. check this listing: http://www.vcoins.com/search/results.aspx type in 'mite'
Depends. Ebay can be really cheap, if you know what to look for and where to look for it. I got my widow's mite for a dollar. (plus three shipping) There are some very high quality ones on vcoins for the same price as the fancy display case you were talking about.
If you like ancient roman coins, go to Vcoins Auctions and to the left find Beastcoins....his auctions, I think, all start at a dollar and you can often get a good deal. Its the kind of auctions I like where they dont start you close to the price of the coin and hope people bump it into big money...starts at a dollar and once in a while you will get a real good price. Also you can buy with very little fear of fakes..
This is just my own opinion I will never buy a coin from E-Bay just to many scammers and not just coins. Some people buy cars on suckers bay without ever seeing it in person. I went and look at a few old local muscle local on e-bay and could not believe the difference from the pics on e-bay. So much rust and just to much to list. Very scary!:rolling: I guess I'm lucky we have like 3 local coin shows on Sundays. each one is a different Sunday of the month I can buy coins that I can see in person much cheaper at our monthy coin show in Burlington NJ then from scammers bay. If anyone ever go to the show please let me know (send me a IM) I can show you the top five tables for best deals. Most times I'm there just to shoot the breeze with some good old collectors The show is only 10 mile from Philly ever There is a show Sunday 01-13-08 from 10 to 4 BURLINGTON LODGE #32 F & AM 2308 Mount Holly Road (Route 541) Burlington Township, New Jersey FREE ADMISSION 609-291-5670 DEALERS TABLES: 40. Available ? Price $
"are coins on ebay really cheap or are online coin stores expensive" coin stores can be expensive....not all but most IMO! Look around though there's some really great sites....APMEX is a really good site and really easy to deal with. I've never had a problem with them and there really good on there prices!
I would never ever buy a coin worth more than $50 on E-Bay. Period. BUT I would buy junk silver, culls and low-priced things. it's really good for that. And I really haven't been disappointed yet on over 400 transactions. (How can you be disappointed if you're buying junk silver!!!!)
In general, on-line coin shops are high. But I treat those prices as an asking price, and negotiate down from there - just like at a coin show. Offer a fair market price and see how you do.
I have spent thousands on ebay and that was only on a few things I knew were worth it for a fact, ( Not just hoped ). I have had a few small run in with shady sellers. But for the most part IMHO as long as your not buying stuff in a rush and take your time to reseach the item and the sellers as muc has you can with a little commen sence you can do pretty good on ebay. Just keep your eyes out on the details or I should say the lack of details. On the other side of that. I sell on ebay and have for years. I have had to deal with more shady buyers then sellers. People that clam they dont get there order is the biggest one I hear. But i make sure that even if they dont opt for it i sill get tracking at very least. This way no matter what i sell, when the person says I NEVER GOT WHAT I PAID FOR. I can say, well the USPS says you did. In almost every case thats enough to stop the buyer scammers from comming back as well as covers you with paypal. Again when buying from ebay YOU MUST UNDERSTAND you are putting your self at risk to be scammed. But even though theres alot of scammers,, there are many more people/sellers on it that are not trying to pork you. good luck.
I agree. E-Bay is like everything else - it has its moments. There are some things I would never consider on E-Bay; I have to see 'em in hand. For other stuff, it's possible to do fine on e-bay .
I feel that the quality of the material on ebay has generally fallen in quality over the past few years. There can be good deals to be had, but one should be very careful, especially when purchasing raw coins.
I was shocked that Philly Dog said everything I was going to say. I had to look over my shoulder to see if he was watching me. :rolling::smile I truely agree to never buy anything from ebay unless you really, really know what it is, what it is worth, who the seller is and no postage and handling stuff. Of course I feel sorry for those that do not have coin shows all over the place. We too have one every Sunday, some on Saturdays and Fridays as well. Some are several days long. Then we also have numerous coin stores, hobby stores that sell coins, department stores with coin/stamp counters and even our flea markets have coin dealers. When you can actually see the coin, no postage/handling/insurance, free parking, free admitance you never need ebay or anything like it. Sure wish everyone here could be in an area of nothing but continuous coin shows.
