    So this isn't steel? Confirms my suspicion: altered date.

    This is a steel one, anything else (copper) is an exceedingly rare coin. I always enjoy finding these, although they are always in lousy shape.

    it is not magnetic... rules out copper coverd steel

    Definitely altered. The 3 is wrong. Probably was a 1948

    1943 cents were zinc coated iron (or steel). The bronze are very rare.
