I won this roach today from JA's auction. The portrait of Gordian III is as good as it gets for this emperor, and the reverse Victory is beautifully rendered. The coin has a strong strike, good centering, and great eye appeal. This coin shows just how high the quality control of the Roman mint still was at this late period of Roman history. Gordian III, AD 238-244. AR Antoninianus, 4.43g, 21m; Rome mint, AD 238. Obv.: Radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust right / Rev.: Victory advancing left, holding wreath and palm frond. Reference: RIC IV 5; RSC 357. From the Arnoldoe Collection
Very nice one @Sallent. I was going to bid on it but I already have two Gordie ants, and I'm in that mode of collecting at least one coin of every emperor/usurper...nice pick-up!
Also, let me state for the record that I am in no way, shape, or form addicted to Gordian III imperial silver coinage. In fact, I can stop collecting them any time I want...I just don't want to now Maybe I'll stop at 25, that sounds like a good number, or 30, 35, 40, ok....50...yeah, 50 is probably enough (maybe).
Very nice win... that's a most attractive Gordie. I don't have that reverse, but here's another Victory type. GORDIAN III AR Antoninianus. 3.95g, 23.7mm. Rome mint, AD 243-244. RIC IV 154. O: IMP GORDIANVS PIVS FEL AVG, radiate, draped, cuirassed bust right. R: VICTOR AETER, Victory, winged, draped, standing left, leaning on shield, and holding palm in left hand; under shield, seated captive.
Nice, it looks similar to this one i used to have, Now I only have one, but who really needs more than one Gordian III The portrait is't as good as the coin i sold/yours but I like the Hercules reverse.
Thanks, it was taken with an I phone 5 with the coin balanced on a lid, you can use it if you like. -You can use this pic too if you send me $50
