I've completed my 12 Caesars under $3000, using only imperial coins, project. Came under budget in fact by $200. I may need to upgrade Galba at a later date with the additional $200....nah, I like my beat up quinarius of his, so I'll just buy a provincial Galba with the additional $200 to compliment the quinarius. Anyway, here is the Nero I was missing. Hope you like it. Nero AD 54-68. Æ As (27mm, 7.20 g.) Rome mint, struck circa AD 65 Obv. Laureate head right. Rev. Victory flying left, holding shield inscribed SPQR RIC I 312
I love it! What a great portrait. Congrats on building your set. I remember how much fun I had building mine.
Thank you. It is and much better portrait than the one I thought I'd be able to get with the remaining budget. Now all I have to do is complete my Good Emperors Set (missing Nerva) and my Crisis of the Third Century Set (missing 3 coins), and I'm done set building for good. I'm not big into "fill the holes" collecting, so 3 sets is more than enough for me.
This coin has a lot to recommend it: good, artistic portrait, well centered both obverse and reverse, legend readable on the obverse with NERO completely on the flan, and a reverse shield with SPQR plainly readable. Well done! Let's see the virtual tray of the complete set!
I got a little package in the mail from Europe today. The contents was definitely well worth the wait. Please excuse my cheap $200 phone camera, the coin is a lot nicer, and has a rich brown/green patina like what the dealer's photograph showed.
