Here is absolutely the MOST radically toned Morgan (or anything) for that matter in the Bonedigger Coin Collection. Here is a Naturally toned 1889 Morgan... The coin has gotten more and more colorful as the months/years go by, Gasp Away Take Care Ben
i agree, that is super cool :thumb: I love the ring around the outside, and the colors that show. Are those colors actually there, or caused by the camera/scanners lights?
Nice, very nice! The spots above and below the bonnet lead me to question if it's NT or AT. MS63 on the flip?
They look like carbon spots. I have an untoned morgan with similar spots. ( beauty marks!!) By the way, nice Morgan.:thumb:
Looks like carbon spotting to me. The spots don't point to either AT or NT...but that looks pretty NT to me. :thumb:
Wow, that is a very nice looking Morgan, IMO. Beautiful color, and I'm normally not one for toning. Very nice. :thumb: Phoenix
Beautiful, just beautiful. I love toned coins, specially when it is not AT. Now for the big questions. 1. Did you purposefully store this coin knowing it would tone? 2. If so, what environment? 3. If you tire of tone coins, can I have it???? I know I was being realistic up till question 3. Toned coins remind me of sunsets. The more dramatic the colors the better. I'm not crazy about AT ing even though some are quite spectacular. Great coin.....I love it!!! Allen
NT all the way, a perfect example of how toning will not creep up lettering and into detail, look at the difference between the Peace I posted and this one. Inside the 8's in the date, the difference of color of lettering to the field adjacant to it, and the rims.....now look at the Peace, it will be obvious Edit: NT can be accelerated, but not faked
I actually purchased this coin and it had already toned up some around the rims. It's only accelerated since being down in the (warm, moist, and smokey at times) basement. I certainly didn't realize the cigar boxes would be the catalyst which started the process when I placed halves and silver dollars in them, but... Also noticed some of the coins which I'd place in my safe have toned up too, but then again I also have a cigar box full of Mercury Dime rolls in the bottom. Thanks for looking Ben
Huh ? I'm not really sure what you're saying here Jack. And Bone, after dark blue comes black. Just a suggestion, but I'd sure change the storage method for that coin - and soon.
What I mean is, in early stages, the highest points will tone first, notice the difference in the color of the word America on the letters vs the field, letters are darker. Look inside the 8's on the date. Very hard to describe, perhaps HOBO will loan you the ANA DVD he loaned me, it is very interesting and makes alot of things you " feel" about NT/AT into a perspective that is easy to understand, but very hard to describe. Later on in the process, where it is much darker blue, it has crept. AT is nearly immpossible to achieve this depth differance. I guess, just open 2 windows and compare the lettering, color progression and rims on the 2 coins in question, then the Peace will jump out as AT. On Bone's coin, I do think the red " new" toning has been accelerated
Your wording was better this time, now I understand what you meant. Those guidelines are fine for a rule of thumb, but they are by no means definitive. In other words, it doesn't always happen that way.
It's a nice coin, but I guess I'm alone with my opinion. It looks AT. Actually, it looks like it had some NT rim toning, then it received some accelerated envelope/cardboard toning. I've seen similar color on coins that were placed on cardboard or in an envelope. Just my opinion.
