This guy must be dreaming. $1500? I can see a grand considering they don’t come up for auction often, but demand apparently just isn’t there for this coin. An AU sold for $1260 earlier this month. A 4 sold for $403 in July of 2004. Is this guy saying that his 3 has more than quadrupled in price in 14 years??? Granted this is one of three AG3 graded by PCGS. I offered a generous $550 (more than the PCGS price guide) that was auto declined.

Wow. Dude can sit on it.

This should be in the thread about scams. Wow, he's off his rocker and the wording is a stretch of the truth.

He also blocked me sending messages. I sent him this message:

    “Dear sir,

An AU53 1867 sold at auction for $1260 earlier this month.

It may be hard to find and locate, but it’s worth less than half your asking price. Demand is not there. I’m guessing you don’t want to sell that badly if you aren’t open to reasonable offers.”

I'm certainly not suggesting you're wrong regarding your position, but I can also understand why doesn't wish to deal with you.

Why is that? Because he’s offended I offered less than half his asking price when the FMV of this coin is even less than the offer I made?

The mintage says 6625(USA Coin Book). My 2015 Black Book says 8625.
So, if it is genuine and not (removed mint mark), it is a rare coin. However, it lists for $400 in G04 and he claims it is an AG03.
He's asking $1450 which would be the price on a good AU.
$300-$350 if genuine. (And this date/coin is undervalued).
What does the Red Book list for the mintage? Thank you.

eBay sellers can charge any price they want. If they don't want to sell it for a reasonable price, then they can just keep it. They could be waiting for a newbie to come along and buy it without looking at what others are going for. Who knows.

Wait a few years - they may want to do better then. :p

I have consigned coins listed for way too much. They don't often sell, but the owner doesn't care. He's buried in some of them since the market correction a few years ago... so they just sit there. Occasionally someone asks me to lower the price or makes a comment like you did. I certainly don't block them, but I just tell them, "the consignee is firm on their price."

On the flip side, his SEGS F12 1876 CC DDO is very reasonably priced. In fact, I just offered on it.

Boom! Won for my offer of $55!

Edit to add: The seller printed a label for shipping within 2 minutes of me paying. This guy is a very good seller in other ways, even if a few of his coins are way overpriced. Not sure starting a thread blasting him was completely fair...

I don’t think it is fair to ask quadruple FMV for any coin, regardless of rarity. And he refused to negotiate or even accept messages from me. I’m assuming I offended him. If someone gets offended over someone trying to do business, that isn’t fair either. $500+ is not cheap for most people. Yet I have cash in hand to drop on it. Like I said. Let him sit.

ETA: I have slightly overpaid for scarce dates in the past that I need and that are hard to find on the market. But not to that degree.

Anxious to see the F12 1876 CC DDO.
I find it interesting that 3 different sources list 3 different mintages for the 67.
They must have gotten their number from somewhere.
Now I need to know what the real mintage is.

My offer was at a 16% discount. Kind of high for such a cheap coin. It was reasonable where it was at $65 BIN, so I am even more pleased to get it for $55. I understand what you're saying, but perhaps he paid through the nose to get it, and doesn't want to take a loss. Sorry he blocked you, though. I only block non-paying bidders and the guys that offer $1 for my $3000 coins (which is kind of my own fault for not setting auto-decline).
